Ben

Ben

I realised that I post more photos of Shadow then I ever do of Ben. Shadow will put himself in photos but Ben is my big gentle boy. He is so good, back in Kent I would take him into the Nursing Home that my mother in law was in once a week and would have to take him around to see most of the residents as they all loved him and would save their biscuits to feed to him :-)

He is a relaxed boy most of the time Dawn. I live near an army base and use the football field to play ball with the boys. A lot of the little kids all come out as they want to throw the ball for Ben. They all queue up to take it in turns. Shadow is still a bit jumpy for them but he is young but Ben is so good and gentle with them. There is one little girl that Ben really loves and whenever he sees her, he runs up to her but always slows down just before he gets to her so he doesn't knock her. She is only 5 and no bigger then him.

What a gorgeous animal! My mum used to have an Alsatian and she was as soft as a brush with the kids, the Alsation not my mum!. Ben looks to have a soft owner too, who allows him on the sofa lol :0)

Lol, guilty as charged Waddy. Can't you see he is my rufty tufty guard dog. :-) never used to let him up when he was younger but everytime I went to do weekly shopping he got up in my chair. I then bought a throw to put over the chair but he didn't like it and would pull it off no matter how hard I tried to tuck in. Gave up in the end. At least he gets into empty seats, Shadow thinks he is my lap dog :-)

I ve had German Shepherds single one Jen but my mate had two boy German shepherds together for years the older one was like your Ben quiet soft the younger one a bit boystrus but the older one kept the younger one in check when the older one died the younger one started to attack and bite people having businesses she could nt take the chance with friends and customers being attacked so she had him put down which the vet advised he said he was kept at bay by the older ones personality now he has gone the younger one has bought out and developed his own personality he has always had now the other dog is no longer there to keep him at bay.

That is sad Dawn. Must have been a hard decision for your friend. Shadow is soft as well just full of it being a youngster. Shadow was getting a little bit pushie so that is why we had him done. I had two springers, both females and they would have handbags at dawn every now and again but the boys have never even had a growl at each other and both really good with Star, my cat. :-).

Sometimes there is just nothing you can do Dawn. With Shadow and Ben, I had Ben done years ago as he had health problems and it's not a good idea to have 2 male dogs, one being done and one not. Can cause problems between them so before anything started we thought we had better get Shadow done. Also my next door neighbour has a female chocolate lab that hasn't been done and when she is in season, it drives Shadow crazy. They keep trying to get at each other through the hedge.

Thanks Dawn. Ben is just one of those dogs that if it can go wrong it will. He was breed to be in Airforce but his bits was in wrong place. Litter senced it and kicked him out off litter so we had him. He then caught one of his back paws and ripped the nail which then got infected so had to have nail taken out but then he got cancer in that toe so had to have half of toe removed. When we got him, he already had his adult teeth and some of back ones where broken so he has had to have them removed. As I said before he cut one pad on boxing day, after op that got infected due to wrong sort of antibiotics but once that was sorted it healed nicely. He now has a bit of arthritis in his knees due to walking a bit off balance due to his toes being cut off and he has shortening of one of his ligaments in one leg. This makes one leg shorter then other but when it tightens more he will then need it cut every 6 months as once cut it grows back. Saying all that, he is a happy, loving dog and I wouldn't change him for the world. :-).
