Dwarf Fijian Tree Fern - Blechnum gibbum

Dwarf Fijian Tree Fern - Blechnum gibbum (Blechnum gibbum)

This dwarf tree fern had no fronds by fall of last year. The heat and drought almost killed it. Luckily, with winter rains it starting sending up fronds in late January. Now, it's completely recovered from the severe drought. Yay!

Steragram:

This dwarf tree fern is doing well, again. Its roots have gone into the ground a few years back. This is why it's doing so well along with lots of water.

I'm so, so glad, also! :>))

This fern I've had over 10 years. It's the longest I've had one. I always used to kill them by forgetting to water. It only takes one time forgetting to water and it's dead as a door nail!

I used to have small ones, and I have a thousand plants. It's actually easy to forget to water sometimes. This fern needs a lot of water. If it goes dry for a little while it will die. It's not forgiving like many other plants, unfortunately.

Wow a thousand plants I can see why you forget. Shame its not forgiving you cant let this one die.

This tree fern I water every day with the water from the shower. I don't forget. lol! It's in a pot which the roots are growing into the ground.

Glad you don't forget to water this , yes I have had plants do that, my sons plants have just done the same. I now have saucers under my pots that sit on the earth so they don't do it.

I've killed every Blechnum I ever tried...silver queen,Chilean,...ONLY the small scale B.pinnae marie has survived and is growing in my yard. Its not a trunker..a clumper.
Good job Andy- they are very unforgiving of one hot day and lack of water.

Stan,

Yes, all it takes is one hot day without water. When I lived in Mission San Jose, Fremont...I had several and killed them. The secret is a really large pot in very water-retentive soil.
