Matucana madisonorium

Matucana madisonorium

I had one of these for about 30 years but it died this summer, and I don't know why ... so when I saw this I had to buy it.
It was labelled correctly (something to be grateful for these days) but I would have recognized it anywhere :o)
It has quite unusual flowers, and even though it is rather small at present I hope it will produce some soon :)

Has this one suffered a name change Hywel? Never heard of that one. At first sight I thought it was lophophora but I don't think they are allowed to import those any more?
Bless it, its doing its best to grow some spines...

Thank you both :)

It isn't supposed to have many spines Steragram. My last one was about 30 yrs old, and only had one spine which fell off many years ago.
I don't know of any name changes. The label on this one said 'Matucana' and I only bought it a few weeks ago.
I bought a Lophophora last year. Maybe it was grown from a seed.

I've still got one that I had in 1965 :)

Ah well,I guess the amount of mescalin or whatever it is in Lophophora is absolutely peanuts compared with what's washing around on the street these days...I'm glad you've got one.
DD I have a Christmas cactus and an Epiphyllum that I've had since the late 1950s (well, cuttings from the originals...)

Thank you Scotsgran.
There are several species of Matucana. This one is M. madisonorium. It has few or sometimes no spines.
It is shown on this page :-

That is a good site of you want to find out about cacti :)

I also look a lot at the cactiguide site you mention. It's very good.

The following page shows the Matucana I used to have. It was about 30 yrs old :-

Wow that is a beautiful flowering cactus. Thank you for taking the time to show it. You certainly have showed again why we all look up to you. OH and I took our unnamed cactus which has grown way to big for the space we had to a local Garden Centre. Pipscactus supply the GC with cactus and succulents. I emailed him photos of the plant and he agreed to adopt it and hopefully propagate from it. He has been stocking up the cactus house for Christmas and we came home with two new plants. An aloe about to flower and another in flower. I will post photos when I take them. OH lost two 3ft high cactus last week. They just keeled over and felt very spongy so he got rid of that potfull. I will add this to favourites so I can consult these other sites again. Enjoy Christmas and your plants with the family

I'm pleased you found a new home for the cactus, and nice to know you had two new plants for it. I shall look forward to seeing the photos.
Sorry to hear about the two that died. I wonder why they did ...
