these are sometimes called faerie stool or artists conk... You can draw pictures and makes directional signs on the underside..by simply scratching the soft spongey white. underneath it is a darker layer. It is a country craft... That golden birch is huge!... sad that these fungi mean that the wood under them is dead.

The lady is from one of my favorite artists John William Waterhouse paintings. Called gather ye rosebuds. I usually change to a different picture after a year. Did you see the dragon sea horse on the BBC Life programme? It was exquisite.
