Fantastic colour the pic does not do it justice ,bought it as a small grafted plant 2+ years ago and is doing great will keep my eye open for another

Mine turns completely pink in the summer from very bright vibrant red in the spring and then turns to bright red again in the fall. It has small leaves and lax habit structure. Does not get very tall.

Yes Bjs, get another one. I think this is a best red colour in Japanese small leaf maple. Simply lovely.

I think it probably did become lighter in summer but to be honest I don't remember, mine is shaded by a large Magnolia for most of the day that may make a difference, promise I will be more observant this year.
Oh and yes it is quite lax I tided it up a bit as one side looked as if it was running away.

I wish for these, but we are too cold. I am so glad you posted them. Also like the way you have "tidied" them. spend quite a lot of time tidying before I dare put anything on this site. All the pics are so good!

I do love the J Acers but I can never keep them. I was so pleased that Atropurpurium came through winter & looked good for a while but it has since gone brown & crispy despite finding it a sheltered spot.

The name you mention features on both grafted (which should be true )also on seedling ones, these are the weak ones do you know if yours was grafted or seed.the graft can you usually be identified a couple of inches above the soil level ?

Brian, sorry for my late response, I had trouble finding the thread.
I went & had a look & there is no grafted union so I suppose must be a seedling. I noticed it is still trying to grow tho & a new shoot is emerging.

they are such a long term purchase that a bit extra paid at the beginning pays off handsomely there are several in the garden i planted at least 40 years ago

Too true, I suppose you get what you pay for. I have to keep mine in a pot as don't have the acid soil they would want.

While i do have neutral soil which suits them about half are in containers as spot plants

I didn't know that - thought they needed an acid soil.
So far mine has been very temperamental.

If the soil is neutral it has no lime so providing it is reasonably moisture retentive it's ok

We have about a foot of topsoil over yellow clay, without testing it I'd guess it is fairly neutral.
