African Tulip Tree Flowering (Spathodea campanulata)

African Tulip Tree Flowering (Spathodea campanulata) (Spathodea campanulata (African Tulip Tree))

If my African Tulip tree continues to bloom through April (which I'm sure it will), it will be three years consistently that its been flowering. Photo taken Feb. 15, 2016.

That's a long time to be in flower!!

Dottydaisy2:

It's an extremely long time. They have a definite time of flowering. All the African Tulip trees have different cycles and certain trees can be in flower at any time of the year. However, the biggest time for flowering is from spring through fall. I have seen the large trees close to downtown San Diego in full bloom in January or February. With this being said: they normally only bloom over 4 or 5 months.

We do not have anything quite that exotic outside, inside yes!

We grow a lot of tropical, exotic plants/trees here in San Diego...that's not unusual. What's so unusual is how very warm to hot the winters have been over the last 10 years. Every winter is getting hotter and drier. Last winter was the hottest on record, beating the previous year. This February is going to be the hottest on record for San Diego.

The hot weather is reason why my African Tulip Tree has been flowering for so long. This tree has a semi-deciduous period for resting (even in the tropics), which hasn't been happening for my tree. The last time my tree went semi-deciduous was back in August of 2014 (while the tree was still flowering), which isn't normal.
