Wonderful, even with no flowers !

15 Feb, 2016

Its about ready. Maybe in a few weeks Sandra.

15 Feb, 2016

Amazing plant! looks like a comfy chair in the background... must be a good place to take a book and a cuppa.

17 Feb, 2016

I love it Hywel but I planted it as i thought there was more chance of flower and then seed. Stan I hope you are right.

Lori the chair was the first thing that moved into the tunnel when we built it. Nothing better than a tea break in comfort...

We have not got any flowers on ours either Sandra, but I am nipping the centres out to make it more bushy it is in our conservatory at the moment, has been since October...

19 Feb, 2016

Its so tempting...but I have kept my hands off this one for 18 months Dd2...it's bound to flower eventually. I watered it today so maybe!!!

19 Feb, 2016

Sandra we have had this particular near black Aeonium for over 30 years and it has never ever flowered, yet our other varieties have.....

19 Feb, 2016

Oh dear....and there was me thinking they all flowered.....ah well ever the optimist!!

20 Feb, 2016

I hope you can prove me wrong........lol

20 Feb, 2016

Sandra:

It should start flowering soon. This is the time of year they bloom here in San Diego.

22 Feb, 2016

Many of mine are flowering now so I am still hoping this one will follow....

22 Feb, 2016

They like warms days and cool nights to bloom well.

23 Feb, 2016

Delonix every other one i grow flowers every year but not this bad boy!!! I would love some of its seed to grow...one day...

24 Feb, 2016

I wonder why that one doesn't flower. That's strange!

I just noticed my neighbor's 4' (1.2 m) tall plant is in full bloom right now. I should try to get a photo.

26 Feb, 2016

4'!!! thats huge....maybe thats why I am still waiting for flowers...mine have never got that big yet!!!

26 Feb, 2016

The tallest Aeoniums here grow to just under 6' (2m) tall.

29 Feb, 2016

i would love to see 6 foot one..they must be amazing!!

29 Feb, 2016

I think I've posted some in the past. 4 - 6 feet tall is what they grow here. The larger ones bloom the best.

The tallest and largest Aeoniums I've ever seen growing were at Carmel by the Sea, just south of Monterey, CA. on the Central California Coast. I actually saw flower spikes on those giants as big as 4 or 5 feet long. They're gigantic! Even the leaves are gigantic! Not sure if it's the cool mild climate? ...or the the very rich soil? Oh, how I wish I had a digital camera back then! (when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area). It was only an 1 1/2 hour drive to Monterey.

the flowers just keep growing up and up when they start...but i havent seen any that big YET!

3 Mar, 2016

You would be shocked how big the flower spikes grow in California. I don't take too many pics of Aeonium. I don't like to say this; however, most people consider them weed plants (including me)...because they're so common. The flowers are very beautiful, though.

When I was a teenager in the San Francisco Bay Area my dad used to have the whole side of the house with very tall (almost as tall as the fence) Aeoniums (many varieties). He grew them there because he had them growing upright like little trees.

3 Mar, 2016

I love weeds Delonix...bet your dads ones were amazing!

5 Mar, 2016

They used to be amazing! My dad and mom (when they were married) haven't lived in that house since 1972.

I do like weeds, also. LOL! All the wild flowers are blooming here in San Diego (they're all weeds); however, very beautiful! It's funny because all the years on GoY I've never taken photos of our beautiful wild flowers (I guess because they're weeds).

6 Mar, 2016

i would love to see your wild flowers....they seem to be my passion...lol

6 Mar, 2016

I'll have to get some photos of the Aeoniums and wild flowers before they're gone. Tomorrow we're suppose to get a pretty big storm. I hope it shows up! We need the rain so badly! The ground is hard as concrete, already! :>(

7 Mar, 2016

Never met a weed I didn't love.... lots of wild flowers here, too, Sandra but no aeoniums that I know of. Is the wild purslane a relative? It looks similar.

12 Mar, 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzgYv1dJiGU I went looking for the purslane info because it looks similar to the aonium...

12 Mar, 2016

... purslane is a portulaca... more interesting reading to do. sorry about the tangent. Have decided to try growing native plants which can be food sources.. purslane is the first...also looking into lambs quarters and dandelions.
Isn't it interesting how we've allowed business to limit and (in some cases) define a weed? Our snow is slowly receding and spring is days away. I want to get my greenhouse moved so I can start my strawberries. one of these days I'll put up a blog on this subject.
Hope all is progressing well in your polytunnel.

Lori:

For a minute I though you were talking about Portularcaria afra. I was going to say I didn't think it grow that far north. Lol.

12 Mar, 2016

I read that with my tired eye too Delonix...aeonium would not like it that far north Lori..but I do love my native wild flowers too. I have been known to pot up a weed that grew in the wrong place.. My favourite weed is teasel I love the way it stands against the wind feeds the butterflys and it's great for drying too

13 Mar, 2016

I'm with you there Sandra, I have had teasels in all my gardens and will have them in the one that's in the making, I'm in the taking turf up stage right now, which is a total pain. Not only are they beautiful when they flower but the silhouette for the rest of the year is an artwork.

13 Mar, 2016

So exciting for you to have a new garden....always room for a teasel...:-)

14 Mar, 2016

yes I love teasel too... and verbascum. both are tall and add structure and form to the garden but both get a little ratty when they go to seed.. still, I love them.
