The only plants in the pond now are oxygenating plants and the waterlilies and water hawthorns.

it is! I've removed all of the marginals except the marsh marigold which is in the back of the pond in the round pot to give the fish more swimming room, the lillies and hawthorns more surface space, and me more space to see and enjoy my fish!
