Don´t worry, it likes pruning. I have this shrub in my garden, too, be prepared for a large bush. It has beautiful wood in winter, looks like bush in flames, it is very nice. I prune it always in June, after first blooming and then it re-bloom in August, although in a less impressive manner.

This was cut back by the council gardener before I moved in last November, but I don't know how long since it had last been hard-pruned; could have been years, it was so tangled and twisted when i got that far down.

I've been a bit too careful, never having had to prune plants before, so this enouraged me to be a bit sterner with other shrubs, which probably need it as much as this one did.

Thanks for the pruning tip, I left this far too long, I'll try to catch it after flowering next year.

You can easily prune it in a globe form. Don´t worry about crossing branches, it is not rose. I will bring some photo of my shrub for you, in order to show you how nice it is once it is "adult".

thanks Kat! I don't know how old any of my "new adopted" shrubs are, or how long since they were properly pruned or the soil around them improved. It'd be very handy to see pics of what the mature plant"should" look like so I can use that for guidance in future.
