Mirror No. 3

Following some experiments earlier in the week with a couple of old mirrors, today I fitted one permanently. Really does give the impression there is a window into next doors garden.

Is this a 'normal' mirror Alan? I want to put another one on my bottom fence but can't see a garden one that I like. This one looks really good :o)

The short answer is yes, Annie, it was an old one a friend had. I think it was off a piece of bedroom furniture, and had been lying in the garage collecting dust.

I lightly sanded the frame down, as it was varnished pine coloured. I took the mirror out of the frame, I then coated the frame with some 'Forest Green' fence care to match the fence. I also coated the backing hardboard with some PVA (for example Unibond), to try and waterproof it a little. Because it is mounted in a slight recess in the fence, hopefully it won't get too wet at the back. I also put some window sealant round the edge of the mirror before putting it back into its frame. I have mounted it on hinges at the top, so that we could adjust the angle, if necessary. My intention would be to take it in, in the winter. I don't know if it would get through our wet, cold, frosty winters very well. I would then clean it and give it another coat of 'Forest Green'. Hope this helps.

PS It's pouring with rain here, so no gardening today.

Have you scoured the Primrose website Annie? They have a good range of mirrors....well, they did have last time I looked anyway. This looks great Alan :)

Thanks Karen. Annie, we have a building recycling emporium nearby which has a good selection of old mirrors, just wondered if you had anything similar near you.
