Does anyone recognise this fungus? It is growing on the ground amongst chipped bark & pear tree leaves at the moment. Never noticed it before. Two other pics added aswell.

Could be either Chanterelle or false Chanterelle. The former smells of apricots & the false C.is scent less.

I didn't smell it much, though I did kind of waft it under my nose & no strong scent came up!
I must see if there are any more & try it again.

I agree with Feverfew. They look like Chanterelle . I do not pick many mushrooms but I would pick up these. They cost lots of money in the store if you can find them.

You have to bruise them a little to get the smell, also my book says that Chanterelles are rather tough & so have , to be stewed for a long time, so not worth the effort. Never eat any fungi unless absolutely certain what they are.I have eaten parasol, wood blewits & shaggy ink caps & they were very tasty.

No I wouldn't eat any of those unless I knew for sure they were o.k. I don't even eat mushrooms very much these days, because my OH is very allergic to them and I don't bother cooking with them at all. Occasionally I might have a nice fry-up breakfast of bacon, egg, & field mushroom (the big flat ones) I like that!!! :-))

Chanterelles looks little bit like Omphalotus olearius and these can make you very ill. There are many spicies of Chanterelles. In our coniferous forest on Vancouver Island Cantharellus cascadensis is native . Feverfew is right....They are meaty but chewy. Eating them raw would make me sick. They have to be fully cooked. They also bake well (in chicken broth with coarsely chopped onions for about 20 minutes) Sometime I would sauté them with butter and onions and freeze them to add later to pasta sauce.

Shirlwhirl, My DH does not care for mushroom either but he likes mushroom gravy . I still do all that fussing because of my European heritage but less and less (with age)

I had some chanterelles at a meal out last night. I have never had them before, but I shan't worry if I don't have them again, they didn't taste of anything much!!
Yet I thought they were expensive! ;o)
