Dahlia Pablo

Dahlia Pablo

I will be taking all my dahlias out next week. We have too much rain in the winter and they rot in ground.

I remember my grandfather doing the same with all his Dahlias. Mum is often at me to grow them but I've enough that needs care in the winter without adding Dahlias to the list!

I agree - I'm not going to grow Dahlias again either!

I think I might grow a few bedding dahlias in a tub next year, just to make a change. Will watch out for the earwigs coming tho'!

Scottish and Sheila, growing Dahlias is a hard work if you have to dig them up, wash the tubers and store them in a cool dry place. That is what I have to do every year. Slugs like the young plants (some more than others) and I have to put a copper mesh ring around them and it helps.
But I love them and they are such wide variety. It is a replacement for roses for me as I can only grow roses in cages and on the deck because of the deer.

The smaller dahlias look good in a tub Feverfew, I was lucky that I have not got any earwigs this year...just slugs.

Thanks Jane.

Klahanie. Do the deer not eat the Dahlias then? I'm always interested in which plants get eaten & by what.

Generally not. They never touched them for years, but last year they found some of them tasty. My girlfriend has large beautiful border with dahlias only and their place is not fenced either. They never had a problem with deer. This year she noticed few nibbles on her plants.
Mine are fine this year. Of course baby deer will nibble on everything.
They are some plants they will not eat in my garden but many that are labeled deer resistant will be munched on.
I must grow them tasty :-)

LOL... I have a fawn who has left it's tracks beside my one and only blooming dahlia this year. It has pruned my hollyhocks down to standing sticks...and now started on the new small plants emerging at the base. my one and only dahlia looks much like this one in colour and petal form. We are having mild weather at present and long range, it should remain so until at least early next week. First week of cold temps I will dig up my dahlias and callas.
