Big Bumble Bee

Big Bumble Bee

I thought until the other day that this, was the biggest bumble bee I'd ever seen. But no, there was an even bigger one, but, by the time I got my camera, it had buzzed off! - sorry couldn't resist! Lol

It sure was Gralew. This morning I managed somehow, whilst dead heading a tall plant, pick up a (big but not as big as the above)bumble bee onto my cardigan. It must've crawled inside and had a little rest, then while indoors I felt something crawling, when I tried to move the unknown from the inside of my cardigan, it started to buzz! It was a case of trying to remove it from, by this time, between my cardigan and the side of my neck, without getting stung. My heart was racing! Although..it did have every opportunity to sting me, it didn't!

Oh dear Motty....hope your ok?

Oh no!!! You poor thing - are you ok? Wasps are dreadful at this time of year - they seem to rile for no reason at all.

That bee just does not know where to start on that gorgeous sunny flowerhead! Looks like it has maybe decided to have a wee snooze first to build up its strength for the task ahead

Poor Motty- hate wasps, they are just pure angry, when I got stung on holiday the hotel owner's young son put neat vodka and ice on it and it worked wonders! So I recommend you have 1 for the sting and 1 to drink, purely because you've got the bottle and ice out!

When I was little my mum gave me my favourite skinny jumper off the washing line, which I pulled on then and cycled off to my Grannys house...all the time wondering why my arm was so itchy-itchy. Rolling up my sleeve to see a bumble bee bum I screamed my head off. Clever Dad yanked the jumper off pronto and the bee was released without stinging me! I love honey so I guess I gotta love the bees!

Sarahm, this bumble bee was moving around! I love honey too, there is a shop here that sell both the honey and the comb in the same jar. This is a tiny garden, which is deliberately planted, with bees etc in mind. About two weeks ago, it was a sheer joy to be stopped in my tracks at the level of noise produced by the humming sound of them all busy at work. The hover flies alone, we're impossible to count, just so many of them - there were five on one hypericum flower - I took a photo as those are not the biggest of flowers! In my old garden, there was a huge plant of Persicaria with long red spikes, which, amazingly enough the wasps seemed to prefer. I know wasps can be nasty, but, in their defence they do eat aphids!

Thanks! This particular Achillea is called, 'Gold Plate', which has very aromatic foliage.. I think it smells lovely. It can, get quite tall requiring staking - the ones here are 5ft & 4ft.
