Adenium obesum - Desert Rose Blooming

Adenium obesum - Desert Rose Blooming (Adenium obesum - Desert Rose)

My new desert rose I purchased last fall is blooming again. It's loving all the very hot and humid weather tropical storm Ivo is bringing us here in San Diego, CA. Photo taken Aug. 25, 2013.

Thanks! I love it! It's loving all the extremely hot and humid weather (I'm not liking it at all, though!)

Beautiful!

Are they related to Plumeria?

Meanie:

Yes, Adenium is in the same family, Apocynaceae.

Other genera in the same family are: Hoya, Mandevillea, Hoya, Vinca, Carissa, Nerium, Pachypodium, Plumeria, Thevetia, Tabernaemontana, Stemmadenia (which I love!) and Trachelospermum.

Stemmadenia is a new one on me - it looks lovely!

It is! :>)

Kopsia species I love, also! (it's in the Apocynaceae) Most can't grow here as they're just too ultra-tropical. There's several species which grow in Hawaii's tropical climate.

Kopsia - superb! K.singapurensis looks really good!

Kopsia singaporensis is such a beautiful tree! Some people have been able to grow this tree here. (only in the mildest protected coastal areas of Southern California). It's extremely sensitive to the slightest chill! Most likely it would die with a morning low temp below 45ºF (7 or 8ºC)

Now that is tender!!

Yes, well, it's native the Malaysia. They never have low temps even close to 45ºF (7 or 8ºC). I think if they get a morning low of 75ºF (24ºC), they would probably be freezing!

Remember it well - happy days!!!

Have you been to Malaysia?

It's been feeling a lot like Malaysia here in San Diego lately. We've had some morning lows of 80ºF (27ºC) here in inland San Diego. It's miserably hot! It's 89ºF (32ºC) in my house right now with the a/c going. YUCK!!! I so desperately need a stronger a/c unit!
