Dalechampia dioscoreifolia - Purple Wings Vine

Dalechampia dioscoreifolia - Purple Wings Vine (Dalechampia dioscoreifolia - Purple Wings Vine)

This vine is growing too well. It's suppose to a slow grower; however, in San Diego's subtropical climate it grows very quickly. Photo taken July 15, 2013.

It's native to Costa Rica. It was not common a few years back...now, it can be purchased at most nurseries here in San Diego.

Wow, that's looking so good. Mine still looks nothing like this. It's just never taken off sadly. I've moved it a couple of times now, but that doesn't seem to have helped. I suppose the good news is that it's still living. Maybe I should move it to one of the new garden beds that are being built at the moment.

Bernieh:

It's growing way too fast! I can barely keep it cut back...I think it grows about a foot (31cm) every day (not kidding).

I was actually going to pm to see if your vine was growing as quickly or quicker than mine. I've always read this vine is pretty manageable. This one is becoming very unmanageable.

Does your vine get full sun or partial sun? Mine gets only morning sun. I think in full sun my vine would grow even faster. Yikes!!!

Up to now mine has been potted and in partial sun, but it just hasn't been happy. I envy the growth rate you're getting from yours. That's just amazing. Mine is definitely slow-growing ... slower than snail pace!!

I'll still persist with trying to find the right spot for mine. I'm thinking that I might move it to a spot in the new garden bed beside the car shed where it grow in the ground and climb up a trellis we're thinking of putting up.

We'll see how it goes then.

Bernieh:

That's so strange. I know this vine is native to tropical Costa Rica. It should grow very quickly in your tropical climate. Maybe if you plant it into the ground on a trellis, it'll grow much faster.

My vine, even in a one gallon size pot (which is small) covered half this trellis in a few months.
