Rebutia pygmaea - The Ideal Windowsill Cactus

Rebutia pygmaea - The Ideal Windowsill Cactus

How this diminutive cactus (The individual cactus bodies never grow longer than about 4 cm) is able to produce such large and numerous blossoms relative to its size without dying of exhaustion is one of the wonders of nature, but like many other high altitude plants (Some would describe this as a true alpine plant - habitat above 3000 Meters in the mountains of Northern Argentina/Bolivia) it takes advantage of the brief Summer to announce to the local pollinators with this spectacular little display - 'Here is some of that sweet nectar which you are so fond of.' and hopes that they will pay a visit and bring some extraneous pollen with them. This particular specimen is growing on my windowsill and receives minimum of attention apart from a little water during the Summer growing period.
