Carica papaya 'Red Caribbean' - Red Caribbean Papaya Plants

Carica papaya 'Red Caribbean' - Red Caribbean Papaya Plants (Carica papaya 'Red Caribbean' - Red Caribbean Papaya)

The papaya plants on the right are my favorite Red Caribbean variety. The two plants right next to each other popped up the first week in June and are 5 1/2ft (1.7m) tall. I hope to get fruit off them next year! Photo taken on Thanksgiving (Nov. 22, 2012).

Thanks. It looks like it may be developing flower buds. Many of my other papaya varieties have buds and flowers and are developing small fruit.

Marguerite:

I do have papayas (pawpaws) on other plants right now. Some fruits are very large especially on my Thai Dwarf plant.

We do not have fruit bats here (we do have 23 species of native bats, though).

Ooooh! How nice to live in a warm country, would have to be grown in a heated greenhouse here in cold uk I think :o))

I heard the complaints on GoY and read a lot about the Australian fruit bats. They sound awful!

I guess we're very lucky not to have the fruit bats here.

Yes, I'm pretty lucky to live in a nice subtropical climate.
We can grow many tropical plants and trees here in San Diego. Many of the tropical trees are blooming now.

You would definitely need a greenhouse to grow papayas in the UK. It's a very tropical plant. Even extended cool periods of time without frost can cause problems to the plants. Here in San Diego they go semi-dormant. Only in the true hot tropics do papaya plants thrive.
