Dahlia beds

After taking a very long time to establish the dahlias are blooming and have lots of buds...while we are skating along the thin edge of warm weather. Frost will be touching them soon...:-(

gorgeous bit of planting, that lemon colour!
will you have to take the tubers up for the winter? i might get away with leaving them in hte ground here, all my cannas multiply like weed and they are supposed to be lifted, yes i will definitely start a dahlia border somewhere.

Always enjoy seeing what's happening in your part of the world Lori. My dad was a an absolute dahlia fan, as a kid I remember these huge football sized blooms right down to small pom pom blooms. Every Autumn he would create a simple low cane tent type frame & hang the lifted tubers upside down to dry before storeing them frost free over winter.

Wonderful bunches of dahlia here Lori. Mine started just before the cold this year too. We are looking at s**w in our future this week. That will change the face of my dahlias.

Makes you want to say the other 4 letter S word! lol Don't you usually have s**w by now? I know when we lived in northern Ontario the kids had to wear their Hallowe'en costumes OVER their snow suits! Brrrr...

It is a little late, but here all the same. On the hill I've already seemed much warmer, no August frosts like the last garden. We still melt of by day, but not for long.

are you on a South facing slope, Gt? That will be wonderful for gardening.
Resi: did you mean callas? I'm getting started digging mine now...they are in so many places. I had dozens of them and plunked them into places which were experimental. Have dug only one bed so far, and have dug up a new part of the field for an extended pond area. Will have to wait til next season to put on the finishing touches but I think this arrangement will be much better during the spring runoff. Planted the two pots of Sib. Irises too...they are yellow ...so interspersed them with the blue...hope they survive.
Thanks Shielar... Moti...severe frost last night finished them...I'll be digging and drying the roots tomorrow.
...a teepee, Bampy? that's a very good idea..going to spread mine on the floor of the greenhouse to dry and put them in the basement in paper bags for the winter. Another aspect which I particularly like...they really are low maintenance. Wonderful plants.
