still no idea what species this is, but at least it's still going. Just replaced the top six inches of soil, rather than lift it out and repot it - it's getting bigger than me!

it's going a b it brown at the base, but I don't know if that's natural, old needles dropping to become a tree rather than a shrub? my other conifers have gone brown, to such an extent that three have died and one's not looking well. But the upper parts of this one seem fine, so maybe this is a natural process with this species

It looks like a Chamaecyparis obtusa but can't see it well enough to be 100% certain. The new growth looks exactly like Hinoki cypress though. My Hinoki cypress varieties all have some brown on them, mostly the inner scales which shed naturally or due to lack of light from surrounding foliage. They look healthy but might be outgrowing that pot before long.

thanks Rkwright. I'll check up and compare Hinoki - if that fails I'll take some better pics and post 'em!
