Giant Barbados Gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata)

Giant Barbados Gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata) (Giant Barbados Gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata))

The cactus grows to become a tree in San Diego's subtropical climate. This one must be at least 25ft/7.6m tall. It was loaded with flowers. Photo taken June 19, 2012 at the San Diego Zoo.

I have the variegated form. I cant tell, but is that the one in the pic or is it the all green? UC Berkeley has the all green as a big sprawling - weedy looking- shrub.
Tender, thats for sure. Mine was getting some size in a 10" pot...then killed back last (2013) winter. I was lucky it re sprouted, made good growth this winter.

This one in the photo is the green form.

I've seen the one at UC Berkely. It has been there for many, many years. It has frozen back to the ground many times; however, it always quickly regrows back.

I meant to say "this summer" and that's only 8" tall and around. It did bloom one year. This summer would have been warm enough, but with just staying alive,I'm not complaining. Very colorful foliage is the variegated form. I have it near my Croton and it holds it own..the orange is a nice compliment to the yellow and red of the Croton.

I tried growing this plant. It died...not sure why. I may have given it too much water.
