compost check

Well done for trying Fran every little bit helps :o) we put tea leaves and tea bags plus all the veg leaves in it all helps to break it down .......

this is mostly teabags and veg peelings, but I also put on old dirt from pots, as I'd read something about it being worked through and refreshed. But I should have broken up the dead plants a bit more! and I need to get a crowbar to break up the heavily compacted mass.

some things especially wood don't break down unless you have a shredder ,we have one it's brilliant , also watch out for putting weed seeds in they survive and grow all over the garden once you have spread it about .. potato peelings will grow as well, each ' eye' is a potential plant ,my OH won't let me put them in the compost !

lol I never peel my spuds - read somewhere that the only goodness in a potato is in the skin - and besides, the way i used to peel them, it'd be better to throw the spud and cook the peel! I just give 'em a good scrub with an old nail brush, used only for that purpose.

I did have something growing at the top of the compost, no idea what it was but I buried it under a load more stuff and it hasn't come back - yet!

I don't have enough wood for a shredder; only dead plants supply the wood, so i hope I don't ever have enough to justify buying one! I've been breaking them up, or at least twisting them to expose the interiros,mangling them as much as I can, I must have thrown those dead plants in as they were.

I don't get too many weeds, cos everything's in pots and I use only bought compost (till now) but weeds still find a home here and there. They're also thoroughly mangled before they go in to the composter, hope that keeps 'em out of trouble.
