Sycamores

Sycamores

I know they are a nuisance, but they look lovely in the evening sun.

I don't like to see ivy growing up tree trunks like this. It excludes the light and eventually kills trees. I first witnessed this on the road from Cirencester to Moreton in Marsh. It seems since we got rid of roadmen who tended the verges we are also losing a lot of the trees bordering the roads. With so many people out of work you would think we could use some of them to do the job. I too think deciduous trees with the evening sun on them are quite magical.

These grow on what used to be railway property. They are all self-seeded many years ago. Apparently, when there was a line there (they're on the old embankment) BR used to clear away all the seedlings. That hasn't happened for nearly 50 years now and there are sycamores all along the bottom fences of the gardens. The land is a school site now - I suppose that means it's local authority land. It's not uncommon for roadside trees to fall down in bad storms. I wonder if that's why?
