Groooo...the thought of it makes me shudder, Bloomer...

I haven't managed to get around to buying some chickens yet...they'd be a gourmet delight for them.

Still, I could keep them in captivity until I get the chickens, though...

11 May, 2012

Lol! I lost count after the first pot-full of thirty five...
I became quite expert at knowing if they were there or not, though...by the quantity of poo on the surface...! :D

12 May, 2012

Oh Yuk! TMI K!!!!!!!!!

12 May, 2012

Oh, that's really gross Karen! Can you give us a bit more info please...perhaps even a blog. How do you know you have them.....how do you pick them out.....how do you prevent them...what plants do they seem to attack the most..what do the adults look like etc....if you could that might help some of the rest of us to get rid as well. Would really appreciate that. :))

I meant how many Chickens....!! LOL

13 May, 2012

My question is ''How much poo'' do these creatures create that you know they are there :{{{{

13 May, 2012

Lol! Pim! Silly me :))))

I'll probably get four chooks! ;)

I should have taken pictures of the compost with the poo, shouldn't I?

I've found one or two in the garden soil - but nothing like the quantity in my pots.

The poo is like little black extruded pellets - 2/3 mm long - a bit like broken up pencil leads. When you scrape off the top inch or two of compost in the pot, you start to see them - they're quite distinctive. Some of my pots were quite nearly all pellets and no compost!! It was gross!!!

The grubs live right down at the bottom among the roots (which they eat) and the crocks, so if you see the pellets - you have to dig down.

But, it must make quite good compost...do you think (as long as you've got all the grubs)?
I seived it all and added it to my potting mix - let's hope that wasn't a big mistake!!!

I've never seen the adults, Karen...but I'll see if I can find out more - once my visitors are away. But I think they eat what's left of the plant on the surface....

Horrible, horrible things!!!!! :((((((

16 May, 2012

Sounds delighful,Karen...not.! Thought about putting a cheapo type J cloth over the drainage holes at the bottom of your pots ? It works..and I don't mean so they can wipe their bums ! Lol.

16 May, 2012

I've never thought of that, Bloomer...good idea!! :)))

I'll do that from now on (I can't face emptying the ones I've already done though...oooh, that bending...) :)))

16 May, 2012

Re the adding the soil to the compost Karen....May be better toask that on Q's...Beetle eggs are minute. Would they all be at the grub stage at the same time? :((

16 May, 2012

I don't know, Pim...I'm banking on it... :/

It's only annuals I've put into that soil...so I suspect I'll find out relatively quickly...??
