how do they stay upright....

Sandra:

They grow upright. The trunks on most palms are extremely strong and fibrous. They can tolerate very strong winds without any breakage (most of the time).

Sandra:

Yes, palms are awesome. We're very lucky, hundreds of species of palms grow here in San Diego.

Cordyline australis is a good palm look-a-like, it's also very hardy. It is not related to palms, though. I especially like Cordyline terminalis, fruiticosa, stricta...these species are smaller growing. My Cordyline stricta is blooming now. :>)

Yes, Cordyline australis grows here, too. The flowers on my Cordyline fruiticosa are the same as the C. australis, just smaller. I'll have to get some photos of my C. stricta before it's done blooming.
