Echinopanax horridum, Devils Club

Echinopanax horridum, Devils Club (Echinopanax horridum)

Not spring but a good specimen shot I couldn't pass up of this common southern coast Alaska plant. It is a large central cane ending in these berry clumps with big green leaves. A small valley of them looks beautiful, but the leaves and cane are coated in long thorns and will not welcome any walkers. In winter after the berries have been consumed by birds the thick cane of thorns remains, a wicked 'devils club' rooted to the ground until the next summers growth. I love the look of them and miss them up north where I live.

The blackberry tolerates so many conditions it as far more invasive. The echinopanax is condition demanding, so it doesn't spread beyond this northern coastal rainforest. This is a relative of the southeastern US ginseng.
