These flowers were way up among the leaves. Meanie, and you thought you needed to get high up for your photo. lol! :>) Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Mar. 15, 2012.

The difference between your local specimen and this one is: this one is growing outside and is 30ft/10m tall.
Many of the leaves on this plant need to be cut off...however, with this being said, this is how they grow in nature.

That's true, and ours never has to contend with wind either.

The leaves still rip even if there's very little wind.
