Phalaenopsis (Orchid)

This "dwarf" Phal is possibly my favourite. Just come back into bloom.

Thanks SL - I gave a few away today, but no way was this going (much as my sister tried)!

i was given a few sick ones a few months ago, hoping they will flower next year now they are better...

10 Mar, 2012

The ones that I gave away were the larger ones - don't have any sick ones thankfully!

Thanks Homebird!

What a fabulous colour! Not surprised you kept this one! Just lovely.

Beautiful! Is this the really tiny, tiny dwarf one which has just become available very recently?

Thanks Sticki!!

Delonix.
Not that dwarf - it's about 20cm in all directions, with the flower being no bigger than 30mm.

I believe that the really dwarf Phal noids (if that is what you refer to) are just held back with pot size and growth inhibitor (as used by commercial bonsai growers). I bought one a couple of years ago for 49pence out of bloom, repotted it and it is now like the rest of my "dwarf" Phals.
Whereas, my standard sized Phals grow huge - the really floriforous red one that you commented on is 40cm across and 70cm tall (which is why I had a give-away).

Did you take a photo of your collection first?

What do you use to get that very effective black background?

11 Mar, 2012

They were mostly out of bloom Sticki.

I took it outdoors facing down the garden.

11 Mar, 2012

I must keep trying! It looks so good.

11 Mar, 2012

Thanks - just keep an empty background and it works well!

Back to the camera manual and experimenting I think!

11 Mar, 2012

Should be a very straightforward shot Sticki.

11 Mar, 2012

Is it? I always end up with lots of background.

11 Mar, 2012

If there is just an empty space in the background you can't!!

Sorry - I did take it at night!

With flash?

With flash.

Meanie:

I was wondering how they kept the orchids so small. I should have guessed the used growth inhibitors, because they do this with many large growing trees here, when sold as houseplants (like China Dolls [Radermachera sinica] for example).

It still amazes me that they can keep Phalaenopsis so small it can fit in a pot size slightly larger than a thimble.

Beautiful colour....

Novelty sells Delonix! At a price here in the UK!

11 Mar, 2012

Thanks DD!

11 Mar, 2012

Yes, those tiny Phalaenopsis sell for 6 or 7 dollars.

12 Mar, 2012

I guess that there is a little extra effort involved in them.........

12 Mar, 2012

I would guess so. It amazes me they grow in such a small pot.

13 Mar, 2012

I doubt that they would for long..........

13 Mar, 2012

I should buy one and find out.

13 Mar, 2012

Good luck!!

Thanks! :>)
