Vanda Orchid - Tokyo Blue

Vanda Orchid - Tokyo Blue

I had to buy my Vanda a little basket.....the roots where snapping when pouring water out of the vase...
It sits on the bathroom windowsill facing south.
I was really lucky, after trying to buy a vanda basket on line and couldn't find a shop that ships to Greece...found this little basket yesterday in town that fits exactly over the vase and it was inly 50cents....

This is going to look stunning!

Thanks Pimpernel...yes very lucky. I am going to have someone bring me over the next size basket this summer.

Meanie,
One day I'm hoping it will look stunning! It needs more looking after than the other orchids that's for sure.

They look easy to make with dowel Alex....

Pimpernel,
Vanda baskets are usually made from cedar, teak, mahogany or rosewood. I don't like the plastic ones.

Hardwood doweling is available here in any large DIY store..I guess it depends on how much the cost to buy as to wheather it is worth making them.

17 Jan, 2012

True...
It will be easier for me to have someone bring it over. Lot's of friends come over for summer holidays. (I'm not very good with wood).

Alexandramou:

Is this orchid growing in water? Why, why, why? lol!

21 Jan, 2012

Delonix,
No, no, no. I was soaking the roots when I took the picture. lol. It gets a half hour soak everyday....but now that the basket is over the vase it only needs some misting and water every other....plus it sits on the bathroom windowsill.....(showers X 5 a day).
I am eventually going to leave it hanging from the basket but first I need the roots to cling the basket.

21 Jan, 2012

Is there a reason why it's not in rock or bark with some soil?

21 Jan, 2012

In rock??? How do they grow them there? I like the way they look with the roots hanging down from the basket....

21 Jan, 2012

In nature they grow in bark or lava rock, with just a little or no soil.

It just depends on the orchid, how they're grown here. Epidendrum hybrids are epiphytic in nature, however, do very well in light soil...even in the ground. Many others like very porous soil with a lot of lava rock or bark...or sometimes in sphagnum moss.

Yeah but if you look at Vanda Orchids....they are mostly grown bare root. I like the look of it....

My next Orchid is going to be a Vanilla Orchid.

22 Jan, 2012

OOhh..I want a Vanilla..but I can't even trust myself with a basic Phal yet....Little tiny steps pimpernel..

22 Jan, 2012

Try a Phal Pimpernel....the worst you can do is kill it...lol
There are so many on here that will help you, you can't lose...take a chance.

I'm going to read up on the Vanilla Orchid before I buy it.

22 Jan, 2012

Lol..I have got 4 Alex..Nice leaves.

22 Jan, 2012

But....no flowers?

22 Jan, 2012

No.well just the 1

22 Jan, 2012

Well then you have nothing to worry about.

My rescued Phal has another keiki now...so three plants at the moment.

Alexandramou:

Have you seen how large the vanilla orchid can grow? It can grow outside here under lath (or under trees), like most orchids. Vanilla orchid can grow to 12-15 ft. (3.6-4.7 m) tall.

My father had a really nice one in Hawaii. It grow very big and developed the seed pods (vanilla beans of commerce).

Here's a pic:

If grown indoors will it produce seed pods? It won't that big in my house will it??? Oh I have a nice spot for this one...
My oldest son has been bugging me to buy one...

22 Jan, 2012

I think indoors in a pot it has the potential to grow half the sized in my previous comment.

I'm not sure if it'll produce seed pods indoors. You may have to do the research on that. Good luck! :>)

22 Jan, 2012

OK thanks. I will do my research before I buy it.

22 Jan, 2012

Here's some very interesting information. I read vanilla orchid can reach 75ft/23m long in its native habitat. That's incredible! I knew it got big, but didn't know it got this long.
