This is much worse than I thought. I do hope someone can help you with this.

Everything should be removed I think and burned...:(((

I can't burn the whole tree!!!

If the whole tree is like this and covered in white - could it be Ermine moth it happens in warm weather and is harmless.
Have you got a picture of the whole area affected?

I didn't mean the whole tree, all the affected leaves...

I did put on another question a day or so later with more pictures. Yes the whole tree is affected and unfortunately has done lots of damage. It happened last year too, but grew a bit after midsummer when the aphids had gone. If you look at the second question you will see how very helpful people have been and I now have some suggestions ready for next year's attack! Thank you for your suggestion though - I didn't know about Ermine moth.

Hi Steragram, we had the same thing happen to our bramble apple treejust part of it was covered, my husband blasted it with the hose to remove most of it we did this twice. After a few days it did start to look better.....

Thank you for your comment:) I have moved to Wales just recently, have visited Pembrokeshire this year - agree - very windy, but beautifull.
That's horrible damage you got to your trees, really. I am fighting constantly with all the pests and diseases that are attacking my trees at work - plenty of them this year... It was interesting reading other GoY-ers comments about not using chemicals. Have to try them at home:)

It isn't always windy - just nearly always! We are only four miles from the coast and in November we seem to get strong wind and horizontal rain the whole month! But the blue skies and sea of good days more than make up for it. If you come to Pembs again send me a pm. Where did you go?

I can't see this just being Aphid and it looks much worse than silver leaf....Or false silver leaf , ifit could be worse. Magnified it does look fungal Steragram. I will keep looking.

Oh my! I could not persuade you to get rid of a geranium....I got no chance here have I ?

Have you cut an affected branch to check for silver leaf Steragram? A cross section will have a purple stain.

Thanks Pimpernel. I did get a PM about this that convinced me it was a particular kind of aphid to which the tree responds by producing that waxy white stuff. Looking closely I did actually see some of the aphids, so it isn't silverleaf, to my great relief! I've been advised to spray with a garlic infusion next spring, so am keeping my fingers crossed.

Re the geranium, I am really very bad at throwing things out - I have this inbuilt compulsion to rescue, which is why I shall never have a show garden...

Lol... I will keep looking. Your garden is lovely why not show it warts and all?
I just liked this photo because we all get these things happening now an then.

Well the damson and the compost bin will do as warts 1 & 2 for starters...
