Alexandramou:

Do you celebrate the 4th of July there in Greece? I heard some countries celebrate this holiday beside here in the U.S.

I think you're going to love this flowering shrub. It blooms for a long time. However, it is very tender to cold... they grow well outside here in San Diego. Have you seen them growing in the ground there?

6 Jul, 2011

Delonix,
People here don't celebrate the 4th of July...but I do. Always a special day....I wanted one of my children to be born on that day and I got my daughter!!! (a secret, I have c-sections so I choose dates).

No, this plant does not grow outside here....it will come indoors in the winter. I plan to eventually close off my balcony with glass....will have too many large plants in a few years that will need protection from the cold.

6 Jul, 2011

That is so nice Crissue, it's always very special to received such gifts from friends. I really miss my best friend, she lives in New Jersey.

6 Jul, 2011

That's funny...picking the dates you want your children to born. :>)

It sounds like Ixora is too tender to grow outside, there. It's a really tropical shrub.

7 Jul, 2011

LOL....my first two kids and I were all born in July. My little guy was due on my birthday at first but because of the c-section he was pushed back two weeks and was born in June.

I think this plant would be able to stay outside if it was in a protected are with some sun to keep it warm but I'm not taking that chance.

7 Jul, 2011

It sounds like you had a strategy. lol! (I'm glad you understood my comment...because I forgot to add "be" in the sentence)

In parts of San Diego (especially canyon areas) Ixora can be a little tricky to grow outside, also.

7 Jul, 2011

Strategy.....lol.

I saw some fantastic pictures of this plant as a large shrub...gorgeous.

8 Jul, 2011

I spelled "strategy" correctly.

Yes, Ixora can grow to 12ft/3.7m tall in the tropics. I've never seen one this tall here...not saying there's not one growing in San Diego this tall (somewhere), however, it's pretty unlikely, though (many times I get proven wrong, this is the reason I really dislike making definitive statements).

10 Jul, 2011

I didn't mean you spelled "strategy" wrong....I just thought the idea that I had a strategy funny. I must have a weird sense of humor?.

It is boiling here today and it feels fantastic. Just a slight breeze in the air so you don't feel like you're suffocating. My thermometer about 3 this afternoon showed 37.5C

10 Jul, 2011

Alexandramou:

Ok...now I understand. LOL! :>)

I'm glad it's boiling there and not here, anymore!!!...we've just got over a horrible humid heatwave today. It's finally back to normal. My house has been an oven for over a week (and I didn't use the air conditioner).

11 Jul, 2011

Delonix,
It's boiling here again today.....we went swimming and the sea was heavenly!!!
I'm not using the air conditioner either...makes going out easier.
It reached 39C in some parts of Greece yesterday. (I'm sure if felt like 40 something in the sun).

13 Jul, 2011

Alexandramou:

It's nice and comfortable here. However, things are going to be changing. This coming weekend the hot and humidity will be coming back with the monsoonal flow. Yuck!

14 Jul, 2011

Delonix,
It is unbearable today!!! I still haven't turned the air conditioner on but I think today will be that day....

15 Jul, 2011

If it's 102ºF/39ºC. (especially if it's humid) it's definitely time to put on the A/C.

We're so lucky here in San Diego because when it gets really hot inland we can escape to the beaches where it's usually much cooler.

16 Jul, 2011

Ummmm Delonix,
I live next to the sea remember. ;o))
We are lucky as well but when you have to work....I feel sorry for all those people that live on the main land.
Today is actually a little better, there is a north breeze blowing this way.

16 Jul, 2011

Well, I guess there's no escaping the heat for you. I'm assuming it's very humid?

I hope it cools down for you soon!

When we have really bad heat waves. We have many cooling centers...places where people can go to cool off for a long period. Most people around San Diego have air conditioners (for inland areas it's a must...or you can die of heatstroke which was horrible problem in California the summer of 2006). We have a good heat warning-system in place throughout the U.S. It was put in place after the summer of 2006. Hundreds of people died of heatstroke!

Here's about the 2006 heatwave:

17 Jul, 2011

We're on our second day of long awaited rain here in France...the heat has been unbearable at times, and tho we don't have AC's, we have ceiling fans on the go 24hrs..

17 Jul, 2011

Delonix,
We are going to have this kind of weather for a while longer according the weather man...
We are lucky because it cools down in the evenings and we get the sea breeze coming in through the windows.

Yes, it is bad when people die of heatstroke...it happens everywhere and mostly to the elderly and people with chronic conditions. We have warning here as well...mostly for the mainland and we have cooling facilities for people to visit.

I will have a look at the article a little later.

I'm so glad I live next to the sea!!!

18 Jul, 2011

Crissue,
This is what summer is all about....I might complain but I like it. Rain......what is rain??? We go for months without rain. We have an air conditioner but only turn it on when we must. We have a ceiling fan also...don't really use that either, it just moves the hot air around. We just have to be patient and keep cool.

18 Jul, 2011

Alexandramou:

It seems to be about the same conditions there as here. I live in coastal inland San Diego...which means I can see the Pacific Ocean from where I live. I think I'm 8 or 9 miles as the crow flies from the ocean. However, it can be as much as 25ºF hotter here than by the ocean (it's all about the micro-climates).

19 Jul, 2011

We are getting our temperature drop tomorrow. 33C for Corfu and 36C down South.

It was a crazy morning today....cloudy, windy, humid and hot. It even drizzled a little....back to sunny, no wind, humid and hot now.

20 Jul, 2011

Alexandramou:

It sounds miserable! lol! :>)

The last 4 days have been hot...today it's very comfortable. It's only going to be 84ºF/29ºC. today...then Sunday hot and humid weather returns (which is our typical "July Fry" for inland San Diego).

21 Jul, 2011

lol...."July Fry" ...what is August then???

22 Jul, 2011

Alexandramou:

It's just the saying around here. Actually, August, Sept, Oct and even Nov. can be much hotter (especially near the coast).
