Humph the hypertufa head (Humpheticous simplicitii)

a head made up of stacked turves I couldn't be bothered to trailer up to our dump site. Always wanted a heligan type head. We hypertufa'd his face, But I have to re do some of his hair.

Wow, he looks like a really cool boulder - and then you see the eyes...... :-)

That is great.

Thank you both. I have to paint the eyes yet. trying to think what paint will hold. son has some car spray so may well go with that.

When you say hypertufad' his face how did you do that? Can I ask what did you use?

Hubs mixed the hypertufa, compost and cement, then with our hands we covered his skin. He looks much better now with his eyes. I'll do another blog.

Thank you

you put the 'tufa directly onto the grass, no lining or preparation needed?

Hi Fran, Yes the tufa went straight onto the upside down turves. I built humph up by stacking turves upside down on each other. And it's still holding on well.

thanks, that's interesting, and informative! and hope will inspire others to try their own mini-Heligans. Did you give him hair that'll need to be cut later - with any luck?

Hi fran, sory about the late reply. Only pop on here occasionally now.............
No his hair is made up of a clump of Luzula sylvatica. It was spreading like mad in a border. I will cut the flower stalks off as they die, but apart from that I will be able to leave it much to its own devices.

Unfortunately, it is breaking down a bit, but he looks all the more oldy worldly now.

10 Jul, 2012

given the weather lately, he's probably entitled to look a bit down! but hopefully he'll spring back when the weather gets back to normal - if it ever does!

10 Jul, 2012

He's looking pretty disgusted with the weather.

10 Jul, 2012

lol so would I be if I were out in it all the time! any chance of giving him a brolly?

10 Jul, 2012

Why should he have one, I don't. :-)

Brilliant :-))

ah, but your're not buried up to your nose in the garden in all weathers! well, only metaphorically ...

:-)

You have a wonderful place! What is that blue little house in the background?

15 Aug, 2012

thanks, Daglelie, I meant to ask before, and forgot.

lol it's Tardis blue, so maybe the "chameleon circuit" is working at last!

15 Aug, 2012

When the OM made it he painted it brown, looked like a bus shelter, so i suggested blue. It's our 'summerhouse' not that it gets used during the summer, it does get furniture tucked away inside during the winter :-)

is it weatherproof, with those window spaces? can't see if they're glazed or not. or is the stuff covered? I'd imagine you could get a lot inside!

16 Aug, 2012

Sorry for late response. No the windows not glazed. But we get quite a few benches and tables pile in there along with a gas BBQ used for heat if i sit outside on a chilly evening.
The paint is weathershield I think, it was striped with a light blue originally. But opinions and time changed all that. He inside decided to slap the one colour on to get it done.
