I have "hibiscus envy"! Mine got nipped back last night. I don't usually cover because I live in a relatively mild area, but that backfired on me this year. Oh, well, waiting for spring.

We have no choice but to wait for the spring here! This plant really seems to need it's sun, as mine is in complete dormancy.

Is that Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Meanie, or H. syriacus?

H. rosa-sinensis Tugbrethil. The plant has basically gone dormant with our short cloudy days even though it's indoors.

The Hibiscus trees/shrubs go semi-dormant here also...however, they always seem to have some blooms during the winter (as seen by my current pics).

Sorry, Meanie! I was afraid that you were trying to grow an H. rosa-sinensis outdoors, and I'd be surprised if that would work anywhere in the British Isles. Obviously not! They will bloom year-round if the light is bright enough, but even around here they need a minimum of 4 hours of direct sun a day to form flower buds. The indoor exposure may be right, but that doesn't help if practically every day is gray. In my case, the buds and outer leaves have actually frozen: think frozen and thawed spinach--fine on a plate, but nasty on a bush!

The only way that mine will go semi dormant is if we move countries!!
Tug - I must admit that I wasn't expecting great things from it over the winter, but it has the makings of a few new buds which seem quite happy to sit there doing nothing until they get more sun! To be honest, much as I like this Hibiscus, I wasn't going to bother getting one. But this was so heavily discounted (75%) in the end of season sale that it seemed daft to pass it by!
Will they take a light frost do you think?

4 Jan, 2011

Meanie:

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis will tolerate light frost (35ºF/1.7ºC) without damage. Temps below 30ºF/-1ºC will burn the tips and some leaves depending on duration...and temps generally at or below 25ºF/-3.8ºC will kill it to the ground.

Ah, I was just wondering in case my heating dies! I have no intention of leaving mine out past September!

Meanie:

Do you have a heated greenhouse?
