Lake Rotoma which is about 15 minutes from home is one of the cleanest lakes in the North Island.

That's going some when you think how clean they are generally out there!
I flew into Christchurch and was gobsmacked when I saw my first New Zealand lake (Lake Coleridge)!
Not sure how well you know the South Island, but one of my strongest memories was driving along route 6 towards Lake Wanaka - you go over a crest in the road and the turquoise lake just opens up in front of you.
