Blooming again! (Polygala Myrtifolia)

My Polygala myrtifolia is back in flower.
Seems happiest if it's kept a little on the dry side.

Yeah - well mines gonna be bigger than yours next year, so there!!!!!
On a serious note though, do you get seed pods form on yours?

24 Oct, 2010

Not.
Just went out and had a look, no seed pods at the moment. Didn't notice any this past summer either. Not beeing mean but mine is covered in buds right now. It seems that all my plants excluding the annuals are doing a lot better now that it has cooled down a little.

So's mine too - in as much as all the branches that exist on this young plant have buds forming at their ends. Must get to the bottom of the pollination process on this!

lol. Had a look on line to see what their seed pods look like....found none.

This flower is wonderful....Would it be easier to grow in Corfu Alex, than here in the UK?...:>)

Motinot, I made mine from a cutting two years ago and it is now very big....growing outdoors.
Meanie is going to keep his indoors.

Too right - it has a big race on next summer!!

24 Oct, 2010

Oh yeah. You take a picture of yours and I'll take a picture of mine tomorrow and we can compare......you might drop out of the race.
By the way, I read in an article while looking for seed pods that (can't remember the area) it is considered a weed because it spreads and takes over like crazy. Mine has one solid branch like a tree.
Go figure.

You may have "one solid branch like a tree", but I've got SEVERAL twigs!!!
I assume that it needs a certain insect to do it's pollination.

lol, lol, lol
Have a look on line, maybe you can make sense of it....I honestly couldn't get it. Something about the different colors and such.

I've got a little further than you - apparently they have bilocular ovaries!!
Gobbledygook to me too!

24 Oct, 2010

I'm relieved now...I was getting worried there thinking it was just me with the Gobbledygook. lol

I found a drawing of a seed pod - I'll post it somewhere if I can't find a photo!

24 Oct, 2010

ok. See anything similar on your plant? I'm sure if you did you have taken a picture and posted it with pride....

25 Oct, 2010

Nothing!
Apart from two tiny caterpillars that is!

Sorry to interupt the "Mine better than yours " routine ha ha ha but just want tpo say thats a brilliant close up Meanie.....

Thank you Milky! The flowers are a little small at the moment - about 20mm or so.

I think it may be self sterile Meanie. You will just have to find another plant of the same species, but not this exact clone of it!

What I have read about it is that it does self seed freely where there are several plants around. Its used in coastal areas in the Med. so you will have to collect seed when on holiday...:-)

26 Oct, 2010

There you go Meanie, warm holidays coming up for you if you want seeds.... :o)
I haven't seen them growing on the coastal areas but I told my family that we are taking a drive all the way down to the south of Corfu. I live up North.

27 Oct, 2010

Thank you Fractal - so I will have to buy another plant then!
The Med is no good at this time of year, but then no holidays for me in what's left of this year anyway.

Meanie:

All you need is one plant for seed development. They seed very freely here in San Diego. I'll have to get some seed pics posted. :>)

This plant is never without flowers here...so it very common for them to be in constant bloom (as long as it receives enough sun).

Thanks Delonix.
Do get some pics, as Alexandra can't seem to get any seed pods either!

Meanie:

Next time I go to the park I'll get some photos...as there are hundreds of plants in Balboa Park.
