Metrosideros excelsa - New Zealand Christmas Tree

Metrosideros excelsa - New Zealand Christmas Tree (Metrosideros excelsa - New Zealand Christmas Tree)

This tree is spectacular when in full bloom. Unfortunately, this commonly planted tree was not in full bloom yet. It grows best at the coast, although very well inland too. Photo taken at Glorietta Bay Park, Coronado Island on Oct. 8, 2010. These tree have many thousands of flower buds.

Amblealice:

Do you have a Metrosideros excelsa - New Zealand Christmas tree? Didn't know they were hardy there...as most species are very tropical in origin. The only somewhat hardy species is Metrosideros umbellata.

Amblealice:

I thought you had your tree growing in the ground there. That was the reason I was so surprised. I do know many species are very tender and tropical or subtropical in origin. Many of the Metrosideros species are native to New Caledonia and Hawai'i.
