Aquired the plums today, so hopefully for tea tomorrow we'll have one too - cann't wait.
Cristina - Damson pie, brings back memories of my childhood, we had a damson tree - Damson jam, Damson wine and mum used to bottle the damsons for pies for the rest of the year. - Oh Damsons and custard. the other thing i remember is the stones I'd line them up around the bowl and see if I had more than my brothers. :-)

23 Aug, 2010

Oooh, that looks nice, I'll be round shortly, Zantac in hand..

24 Aug, 2010

lol bamboo, dont mention them , im fed up with damn acid hahah

24 Aug, 2010

Have either of you ever tried Homeopathic medicines ? I only ask as our daughter had NHS hospital tests, prescribed tablets, no diagnosis given, could be Crohns or not ! She visited a Homeopath at my suggestion and hasn't looked back. Rarely takes any tabs now, almost back to normal, just the occasional 'blip'. Worth investigating ?.

24 Aug, 2010

Thanks Shirley, but actually, I discovered the wonder of digestive enzymes, a formulation that excludes the name I can't remember of the one that encourages acid formulation, think its betaine. That means I only take the Zantac at bedtime, to prevent acid reflux when lying down, rather than the double dose twice a day the doctor recommended, so much better. I found taking it at the high levels I needed meant I wasn't absorbing any vitamins from my food either, so switched to the enzymes, and make sure I take my vitamins in the 12 hour gap with no Zantac functioning. Lord knows how people absorb essential nutrients if they're on one of those one tablet lasts 24 hours type drugs for acid reduction. The doc's always asking why I'm not getting through enough Zantac, thinks I'm suffering instead.

24 Aug, 2010

Sounds like you know exactly how to control your digestive system ! The weird and wonderful topics on here never cease to amaze me ! LOL

24 Aug, 2010

thanx shirley iv had a camera down and found nothing, iv had this since galblader op, but tabs not working again, its everytime i eat and im carefull what i eat cause of IBS ;o(( its a real pain and get fed up, got to go back to docs in a couple of weeks, but woth looking into if i cant get it sorted out,im not on zantac im on Lansoprazole,

24 Aug, 2010

OPur daughter used to take Asacol, so funny when she had her last visit to NHS clinic as the doctor asked how she was, she said she was so much better and he asked how many Asacol tabs per day she was taking. She told him she didn't take any, just the homeopathic ones and he said, well, if it works for you, carry on !

24 Aug, 2010

thats great shirley, may ask my doc about it as some do believe in natural meds dont they, i hope mine gets sorted shirley as its a visious circle, the acid doesnt help IBS, i dont seem to have a day without some sort of discomfort or pain for months now,

24 Aug, 2010

Some NHS staff agree with complimentary medicines, others really don't, hope you get sorted before too long. : o ))))

24 Aug, 2010

sorry late replying shirley, tum started again, taken tabs, thankyou for addvice im off now to rest, nite x

24 Aug, 2010

Can't wait for the chutney recipe, Shirley!!!

So sorry to hear that you are still having probs, Sandra :-((( Hope you get a good night's rest!

Yes, Shirley, it's homeopathic and herbal treatments in my house since before the kids were born, and pets get same treatment. :-))

24 Aug, 2010

Ok, Sandra, take it easy. : o ))))))
David, pets get the same treatment, excellent ! Well, if it's good enough for the Royal Family . . . .. lol !

24 Aug, 2010

thanx david, thought it was all behind me after op, but hey ho, there are worse things,x
i looked up on net shirley and there were tabs or liquid to take but at a price which i dont mind if you know it will work, im a bit scared as ive tried things from health shop and ended up being worse, the last things i got came to almost £50 and after a few days ended up so bloated and full of pain i had to go see my doc, she told me not to go to health shops and take anything like that again ;o(( so can see why im hesitant cant you, feel a little better today but not 100% at moment x

25 Aug, 2010

ps, shirley could you send me the name of tabs your daughter takes so i can look them up plez and any info would be appreciated thanx,if you can send info in pm x

25 Aug, 2010

Well, I'm ten years on from you - by this stage, you sort of accept that's just life.I used to moan and groan about it, but somehow, passing 60 means its what I expected, lol!

25 Aug, 2010

oh no im thinking about another ten years ;o(( plez i cant stand it , well even though it drives me insane i dont let it get me down, i wont let it, i cant or my hubby will devorce me haha

25 Aug, 2010

Sorry to hear you've not been well again Sand. Have been away for a week. My Daughter has had some terrible bouts with her gallstones while we've been gone. Tabs are not doing much for her at the moment. She's had to phone hospital to see how much longer she has to wait to be seen. It's terrible when you're suffering. :o(( Ps. Can I just ask how wet the mix should be on Shirleys cake? I tried making one for my Son-in-law, but mix seemed too sloppy. Tried again, but drained the plums so there was less juice, still seemed a bit too wet. They were both edible, but more puddingy than cakey, if you know what I mean. Sorry to ask you this with your tummy trouble, but am going to try again today.:o))

30 Aug, 2010

sorry about your daughter linda and hope she gets sorted out soon poor girl,
cake is more pudding like i must say so its ok,
im full of cold after joes party and mum has broken collar bone when she got home , so iv spend last 24 hours at hospital and caring for her with my dad who is parchially blind,
just popped on for a quick check and wont be back till all under controll ok
take care and see you soon x

I dunno what Shirley's recipe was, but here's my one in case anyone's interested - isn't puddingy at all.
4oz light brown sugar
4oz margarine
2 eggs, beaten
half a teaspoon vanilla essence
8 oz SR flour
Little milk
11b ripe plums, stoned
Grease a deep 9 inch flan tin (I just use a 6 inch cake tin)
Reserve half teaspoon of the sugar, cream the butter and sugar till light and fluffy, gradually beat in the egg and vanilla essence. Fold the flour into the mix with enough milk to make a soft drop consistency. Press half of the mixture into the tin, arrange plums on mixture, cover with the remaining mixture, making a raised rim round the edge. Arrange rest of plums in a pattern on the top, pressing them lightly onto the dough. Bake 200degC, 400deg F or Gas mark 6 for about 30 minutes, or until the top is brown. Sprinkle with reserved sugar immediately so that it melts. Serves six.
I don't bother with all that, I make the mixture, stick it in a cake tin, and shove the stoned plums into it and shove it in the oven on a slightly lower temperature for a longer time. I don't have a deep flan tin, lol!

Lol. Bamboo. Will try yours now too. They say 3rd time lucky, and so far my 3rd attempt at shirleys came out ok. I've been using too many plums. In fact your recipe is similar to what my Mum used to call her Somerset Apple cake. So sorry Sand for all your upset. Must be hard for you, trying to juggle everything, and worse when you're not feeling up to it yourself. Hope you had a great time on Joes' birthday and everything went to plan. My cake yesterday was better. Mixture wasn't so stodgy. I've been using 8 plums and not 8ozs. The plums were quite big and juicy, so that was the problem I think. Take care and look after 'yourself ' if you can. ;o))
