Cyprepedium reginae - 2010 (Cyprepedium reginae)

Lady's slipper orchid from eastern North America. Needs a sheltered site in humsy soil, not too dry, in part shade. I've flowered this before but not got it through a winter (may have been too wet or found by slugs) so trying it in a different place with protection

Good luck with your efforts to get it through a winter.

I like these :-))

These are blooming expensive but this one is supposed to be the easiest to grow. If I lose it again, I'll be passing the hat around for another try...

I'm rarely lucky enough to see this growing wild here (which is the only time you'll see it, it's supposedly very, very difficult to propagate). However, years ago, I did find large numbers growing in an unlikely place - a narrow strip of woodland between a subdivision and the apartment complex I lived in at the time. I would walk the quarter mile nature trail after work nearly every day, and one evening I was shocked to see these growing by the dozens. I'm sure no one else knew they were there. I don't think Georgia has elevated this species to protected status, but it is most definitely considered threatened. Good luck with this one.

By the way, I just checked the Gardens of the Blue Ridge website, which is one of my favorite spots to buy natives online. Yellow Cyprepedium plants are selling for $50 each, and bareroot clumps from $85 to $125. I think I can pass on those for a while.

Is that a copper ring around it Andrew, do you find they work ?

Louise - yes, it's a copper ring and they do seem effective

Do you use these on all types of plants and are there any plants it doesn't seem to work for ?

I use them for any plant that is vulnerable to slugs or snails and so far, they seem to do the trick
