Lovely garden view, is the pumpkin real or ceramic?

3 Jun, 2010

Annella it is ceramic, holds a candle and I bought it for bonfire night a couple of years back now, have quite a collection of haloween candle holders made out of pot now. they look lovely when they are all lit up and it is dark just right for the spooky autumn time.

What is the hedge on the right hand side beyond the arch Mum?

3 Jun, 2010

A tree - holly like leaves - with catkins - well supposed to have catkins but never does - had them when I bought it but nothing since, think the soil doesn't suit it, but it stays because it is at the end of the border bit like a full stop. lol. maybe it doesn't produce them because I chop it back it grows like crazy. It is encased in an old tractor tyre, which once held sand for the girls to play in when they were tiny.

Is it Garrya Elliptica?

Think that rings a bell Karen
Anella bought it in Scunthorpe, but have seen lots since in various garden centres which I am prone to visiting on numerous occasions LOL!!

Dark green - a bit dull - evergreen leaves with long yellowish catkins in the late winter. Mostly used as a wall shrub. It's quite lovely in the late winter when nothing else is flowering and the catkins are about 6" long and very effective. Rest of the time it is really dull and sad looking, which is probably why you are chopping it back - to get it to bush out a bit and look a bit better. Shame you're missing the best bit!

Sounds like mine that - ah well we will see I won't trim it back this time and see if I get some catkins

Lovely garden....Love the paths leading you through. Stunning place to sit and relax.

course you could always put a clem. viticella to grow into it to brighten it up in summer! ;)

Jem 2002 it is lovely

What a good idea Karen, will visit the website, have a plan for another spot also, where the double hollyhocks are, they got awful rust, have grown some more and the babies look as if they are getting it too, so will think about giving up on the hollyhocks and plant a rambler or two up the end of the old aviary/chicken shed. Have three clems. growing up my Lavender Pekin pen sections, at the side of my veggie patch, they are doing really well. So think I will re-vamp the side along the crazy paving path by taking out the rocks and flatten it and grow some more up the fencing panels there. I must have got your bug for the clems. It is only a plan in my head at the moment, maybe start on it at the back end of the summer when it is cooler, boiling hot yesterday, rain and more rain and storms this morning, but the garden needed the water and it saves me doing it with the hosepipe. Cricket match just been put off, waterlogged pitches.

Great idea. The rust is a pain on the hollyhocks. I've just been out watering the front, we've had cloud all day but no rain yet. Expect it to be starting soon though. Was thinking about you in the heat again yesterday. It was wonderful here, just perfect temp with a nice cooling breeze. Scott is very brown from all his golf! I'm going to start buying a few more of the lower growing ones and get them in amongst the rose bushes, but no more this year. I've spent a fortune on the garden again, every penny well spent mind you! :))

Wow just been having a quick peep around your beautiful garden, would love to wander down that lovely path and look more closely at all your lovely plants.

It looks good when it has just had its trim and tidy up. I am pleased with it now, the big border still needs some work doing with it, but it is filling in now and I have plants in pots growing on to put in spaces that need filling. So pleased you like looking around it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
