Oh Andrew not a very welcome sight is he

He is glorious but I don't want him near my pond! :o)

These ***** things have had every fish in my pond. It will just be a wildlife pond from now on - the fast food restaurant is closed!

The heron visits about two or three times a year. But there are no fish in the pond and as it is semi raised, he can't wade in anyway

Love the chappie, but lost all my koi to one of them. Its a shame we
cannot welcome him in if we have fish ponds. I have a large net on my pond
and it is going to stay on for good!!

Good photo. He was obviously hoping for some fish and chips for lunch.

He's handsome Andrew. Lovely photo.

I very often have one visiting, difficult to keep them away as they hunt at first light. Beautiful bird though.

A great picture Andrew. Now, a question to everyone, can't you raise fishes to the herons on your ponds?

15 Feb, 2010

WHen I had my pond the herons visited and we never saw the fish for a week. They used to hide in the weeds. In the end we put a black net just above the top of the water, leaving an open bit at the shallow end so that the frogs and toads could get in and out. The bees and wasps used to go through the netting and land on the lily pads to get a drink and the dragonflies and damselflies used to go to the open corner.

Your pond plan was perfect Linda.

We found to our cost Dawn that the heron could take quite a few fish at a time.
Living near the river there were several around too. The fish that were left went down in the deep part to escape. We made the pond four feet deep in the middle. I miss having a pond now I found watching the fish was relaxing and seeing the dragonflies was an added bonus. We only have a small garden now.

He's a beauty, looks very well indeed - last two I've seen sitting like that it's been freezing and wet and they've looked so bedraggled and miserable, nice to see one looking good.

~there has been a permanent heron in the valley below the castle for years,we used to have fish but he had them all~only frogs now!

16 Feb, 2010

Lovely to see them in the garden, so long as you haven't a pond, we lost most of ours to a Heron, so no pond any more, although I do miss the fish.

Arlene when we had the smallholding there was a shallow pond at the bottom of the land with a small trickling stream running along and the herons used to sit there and wait for the frogs.

17 Feb, 2010

oh dear~ I like frogs and herons~ lets hope there are enough of both!

17 Feb, 2010

oh no! Heron's can eat every goldfish or koi you've got in no time at all~...did he leave before he had cleaned you out? lol...pays to read first... they are wading birds. My neice lost some very expensive fish to such as he! ...she bought a fake alligator (also expensive) and that kept the herons out of her pond.
