My newly planted summer garden

I have just about finished planting out the summertime 2010 flower beds here at Dingley in Victoria, Australia. I renewed and replaced all the soil in the garden beds and planted them out - mostly with flowering annuals I grew from seed in the greenhouse. I think there are about 2,500 odd plants in total - no mean feat, and about 20 days of work for me so far. So in about 6 weeks or so the front gardens should look magnificent again with the 2010 summertime blooms!

Will be waiting impatiently to see the photos Jim!! How do you go watering your beds ... do have watering restrictions?

Hi again Bernieh,

Melbourne has 3a water restrictions, so we are only allowed to water using scheme water twice a week for 2 hours in the morning, but i being a plumber by trade have an extensive water tank and watering system setup. I use water from rainwater and washing machine water for the flower garden, and shower water for the lawns. The used water is a bit smelly, but the flowering plants just love it. I mix ammonium sulphate to neutralize the caustic soap chemicals, and a soluble balanced fertilizer to make sure the plants have all the essential nutrients, and it works a treat!

Well done ... clever use of your grey water. We have a rainwater tank but with the little amount of rain we get every year, it's next to useless ... I use that to water in my greenhouse. We also use the grey water from the washing machine and the bathroom to keep one little section of our yard with a bit of green grass..which the wallabies love to eat!!

We're on similar water restrictions ... it's done according to even and odd house numbers ... being odd (I'm talking about my house number now!!!) wer're allowed to use sprinklers on two days a week for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. It's been like that for over 15 years now so it's normal to us.

Makes me realise how lucky we are, but we don't get too much sun......so swings and roundabouts :-)
