Swiss Chard ' Ruby '

Lovely red stems on this vegetable , the leaves can be eaten like a Spinach and the stems cooked in the same way as Asparagas ..
Also I have seen the plant in flower beds to add additional colour in the borders ...

Tastes very much like spinach - its best to eat the stems when smaller - they taste nicer just steamed!

It could have been BB , I don't think it would have been rhubarb , aren't the leaves of that poisonous , why do I think that ? must have seen it somewhere .. The colour of the Chard would look nice against the Salmon ..........

Grew this on the allotment last year, didn't like it at all, I probably left it too long then maybe thats why, husband liked it, had a really irony taste, the only way I can think to explain it.

Yes Amy when I cook most things served chard. Sure you right about rhubarb leaves if not poisonous dont think they taste too clever.. for some reason recall someone describing taste as slightly aniseed would that sound right Simbad ?

I'm going to have to try it .. I don't like the sound of it tasting like Iron but I do like aniseed ... each day it's getting older ..LOL... today I'm going out .. tomorrow night we are being taken out to dinner to a restaurant that has been bought and run by that chap who's on TV , Chris somebody ?? that will be interesting , it will be funny if he has some on the menu !! that makes the chard another two days older ......... hope it hasn't gone to seed by the time I get round to it .. :o)

Yes - rhubarb leaves are poisonous.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the different colours of chard had different flavours - this one would be strawberry... or beetroot flavour...and the leaves look kinda chocolaty ;-)

Oh I'm pleased you showed this Amy...I took a couple of pics last week of this veg, but wasn't sure what is was......its lovely for winter, there was both red and yellow Chard. Now how do you think you'll cook it....will it be like cabbage...you can imagine it could be a bit tough..but full of vitamins and minerals......:o)
He..he BB!!! We'll not come over to yours then....:o)

I steamed some of the Swiss Chard at the weekend Janey ,, I did like it , I didn't think it was so much different to cabbage really , I put the stalks in to steam first as they take longer than the leaves .. they stayed a nice bright colour , there didn't appear to be a problem with nasty caterpillers eating the leaves as there often is with the cabbage , so made a change to have a different Veg.. :o)
