If only.......Wouldnt I be happy.............

Looks wonderful, and happy. Are those lemons growing with it?

I didn't even try putting mine out, afraid of our freak chills even in summer. Now I'm used to the greenhouse, I think it could go a month or two out there.

22 Sep, 2009

Yes I do Morgana, its in a huge pot, but it goes into the greenhouse.....

22 Sep, 2009

Thank you Milky, I ve always wanted to grow one of these, so now I know I can't no where to protect it for winter. You have done a great job growing this and the Flangepans.

22 Sep, 2009

22 Sep, 2009

Oh right, you lucky devil, having all this tropical stuff in your garden :-))

22 Sep, 2009

Its nice Dawn, but try fitting it all back in the greenhouse for winter after its all grown ha ha ha ........

22 Sep, 2009

Yep, I can imagine its a bit of a squeeze, maybe Ray will build you a new greenhouse when he's finished the pond.

22 Sep, 2009

Oranges! And there is a bunch. I was going to get one this year, but the budget didn't budge, they are really expensive here.

23 Sep, 2009

Dawn I have said that I would like an extension on it but he just glares at me....Greenthumb, have you tried growing one from a pip.....My daughter in law has managed to get one going......could be worth a try....

23 Sep, 2009

Keep working on him Maureen, he may crack in the end.

23 Sep, 2009

I shall Dawn..........

In a plant propagation class when we were studying citrus we discussed that many are not fertile because of breeding and some that germinate will never fruit. I have been discouraged since. We get the bottom of the barrel of fruit as it is way up here. Tree will be costly, but mature and reliable. Imagine growing one on for five years to find it doesn't fruit or flower, or makes hard little useless oranges. Darn the F1 generations.

Ha ....Oh dear....that is such a shame Greenthumb......Interbreeding has a lot to answer for..........

Milky do you heat your g/h overwinter or have a frost setting Id be interested to know for my little g/h
PS
Do you know what my dogs Mother has in common with your plant ??

24 Sep, 2009

Davey...I double wrap in bubble wrap in the greenhouse for winter and my heater is set to come on if it drops below 8 degrees, What does your dogs Mother have in common with my Musa?

24 Sep, 2009

Thats a lovely plant Milky...mine is now in the garden room, we dont have a greenhouse, it has grown another leaf already and we have only had it a week?

24 Sep, 2009

Milky:

Very healthy looking Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii'. They are very widely grown in the ground here. It will enventually grow pretty tall...more than 20 feet / 6 meters. It's actually not in the genus: Musa...however, it's in the Musaceae (banana) family.

25 Sep, 2009

They grow like triffids Dotty....especially if its warm in your garden room. You may end up raising the ceiling height before the winter is out he he he he he.............

What does my dogs mother have in common with your Mussa did I hear you ask.....

They can both have pups

......ie "Propagation of bananas is with rhizomes called suckers or pups"

25 Sep, 2009

Oh dear Milky him indoors doesnt realize that...........lol

25 Sep, 2009

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ............Lol

25 Sep, 2009

Well Davey I didnt realise that.......Thanks for the info... Mine now is so fat in the base of the pot Im just waiting for it to crack....Lol Maybe then I might find a rhizome........

25 Sep, 2009

i have just bought one of these this year i know it has to be brought in but tips would be a great help please Milky what temp green house etc thank you

26 Sep, 2009

I had one a few years ago & noticed another shoot & carefully seperated the new pup - I think I sold one on eBay but lost the other over winter, Im still working on the base for my new g/h but will have it soon cant tell you how much Im looking forward to it.
PS The temp Milky mentioned was 8 degrees min, Id guess its pretty much the same as other plants let them have a dormant rest very little water anyone correct me if Im wrong :-)

26 Sep, 2009

Davey.....when I said that mine was 8 degrees, that was purely for the fact Im growing Plumerias.....Unless you are overwintering tropicals, you could drop that temperature another degree or 2......
