Wow - this is very impressive!!! Are there enough flies to feed this lot?!

I do have a few Bernieh but what do I say, they grow on you lol
But I've been growing them for some years now.
Trouble is,they keep on multiplying.Think I need another greenhouse

There's always flies around them Sid,it's the nectar that the plant secretes around the rim of the pitcher that attracts them, but it keeps flies out of the house lol

If you've got too many and not enough room - just send them on downunder ... we've got enough flies in the summer to keep thousands of the happy!! I have seriously been thinking of getting one for the courtyard - I'm very lucky that I live up here in the hills and don't get as many flies, but they few we get are still annoying on a hot, steamy summer day!

Bernieh,
If you'd like to have a go at growing your own,I'd gladly send you some seeds, but I've seen the programmes on tv about your customs control.Boy aren't they strict?I doubt even a flea could jump through that border lol.
Be warned though, they also attract flies!!
BTW,whats a HOT,steamy summer day??
I think we had one once but must have been asleep at the time.

Yes you're absolutely right about our customs restrictions - only a few illicit things seem to manage to sneak through and nothing else!!! As for hot, I think the coming summer is going to be an absolute scorcher as our winter days have mostly been around 27 degrees C. There are many, many days when I wish I had your summer!

Ah, 27 degrees C - if only!! lol

Flyplantsman - I had been wondering if the plant had something that tasted nice (to the fly that is!!) around the rim of the pitchur as I have seen flies 'tasting' the plants....they are very good at what they do these Sarras - I'm amazed at how many my S. stevensii catches, and he's only little.

Wow Bernieh,27 degrees C and thats just a winter temp.
That would suit me just fine for a long summer and without this darn wind.
This year it seems to be up n down, hot one day then wet n windy the next.
But to be fair,I think it's maybe one of the best climates to grow a wide ranging & diverse species of plants.

Sid,
The "nectar" that the plant produces is created in part on most areas of the plant but the majority is produced around the rim and along the spine of the lid.
On newly, fully formed pitchers, you may be able to feel a stickyness on these parts.
Looking at the pic of your "stevensii",he may only be little but if divided could give you at least 4 new plants.

Yes, I had been looking at him thinking that...... lol He's a bit bigger now than in the picture I took too :-)

He's growing,he'll soon be off house flies and onto bluebottles and wasps.
