Cyad revoluta

Sago Palm plant.I had this for 2yrs now and it has just sprouted two long leafs. The only thing different I did was to plunk it in a round tray filled with gravel and a little water.Voila! It's magic!

Usually the cycas revoluta produces its' new leaves all at once in a circular pattern and they are short - I have two myself. When it produces long leaves like this as its' new growth it usually means it's not getting enough light. They need good overhead light otherwise they will stretch towards what little light there is. Do you have it somewhere where it gets bright light or a few hours of either morning or afternoon sun?

I had it outside in direct light (and intense heat). It was turning brown on the edges so I brought it in and put it on the fridge. It gets indirect light now and humidity from the gravel tray underneath.
I'm wondering if I should've re-potted it because some of the roots are growing out of the bottom.I'm not sure of the soil mixture needed.( tropical mix??)..and I'm not sure where to put it in in the house come Winter. The fridge is warm on top .

Do give it ample root depth by picking a pot or container that is deep. These plants are quite cold hardy but don't survive freezing temps, snow and frosts. They need bright light and they like hot summers. They do want to be over-watered. Let the soil dry out a bit before watering. Try to avoid overhead watering as this can cause rot and possibly total decay of the plant. The soil mix should be quick draining and you can fertilise with a balanced tropical fertiliser with micro-elements. They are slow growers and will only add on about 2-5 cms of growth in a year.

Glad I read this.I was going to get a wider pot instead of a taller one.Thank you for your suggestions. I will try it.I was being careful not to overwater, but now I'll give it more.
