WhoooHoooo ! it worked!

Well, now, that was easy…don’t know what I did wrong yesterday…ok, onwards and upwards…I couldn’t open my back door all winter, so yesterday Patrick, one of my three sons, opened it for me and I was able to walk around my back garden..there’s no window overlooking it, and I could hardly wait to see what has survived this first winter in my new home..everything in the garden is brand new, and our winter was SO cold this year, I didn’t know what to expect…the “big” tree..can’t remember what it is, but it looks great, has little, little buds, bless its wee heart, but the smaller “pompom” tree looks not at all well..I read a tip that said to wrap old panty hose around the trunk to stop the rabbits from stripping the bark, but the stocking has been ripped off, and much of the bark is gone…on the other hand, 2 evergreen plants look hale and hardy, and the three daffys are so green, such a treat after all this white….there’s also a green ground cover [I think that’s what it is] that seems quite tough..hope it’s not a weed..if it’s not too cold tomorrow, I plan on taking photos…

Hello odaatpat,
When I read blogs like yours discussing survival of plants after a cold winter, I realize just how blessed we are here in Arizona. Every now and then we get a freaky bit of cold but for the most part I garden in fair weather. I can still identify with "things that survive" because some of our hot temperatures are killers of some plants that instruct "Plant in Full Sun!" I've learned to take such instructions with a grain of salt! I wish for you a high survival rate! = )

Welcome to Goy Odaatpaat, I think you had our share of winter, its been very mild here but we were very lucky as a lot of places suffered terrible flooding, its always exciting to see everything emerging as the springtime comes so lets hope you soon have lots to see, I look forward to seeing your garden, I gather from your profile that its a new one so I hope you are soon out planting but mainly enjoying it........

hi, Gardengnom...thanks for reading my blog, and taking the time to reply..well, talking about the heat, last summer it was so dreadfully hot, with high humidity, that people stayed indoors much more than usual...I heard on the news that global warming is going to result in severe weather..flooding, earthquakes, etc., and the prediction for Canada is temperature extremes..certainly these last 12 months have been true to that...even here, I've had to be careful about planting in full sun...bushes seem to be ok, and those plants that tolerate drought work best for me, although i always give them some temporary shade when I first put them in..one thing about the weather..we have such distinct seasons, each with its own beauty, that I'd miss all the changes if the weather was constant year round......

welcome to GoY. Glad you managed to post your blog.
We have had it very mild this winter except for the flooding in other parts of the UK.

Lets hope you find you have lots of hardy plants surviving the winter.

Hi there, Linclass...nice to hear from you, thanks for responding so quickly...here in my town we are sheltered by Michigan's thumb on the US border, so we don't get as much snow as other parts of the country, although we get plenty!, but this past winter the cold was so bitter it took my breath away when I first went outside..of course the fact that I'm in my eighties might have something to do with that! The people that have truly suffered this year are those on the East coast...if I heard the report correctly, they have had 24cm of new snow in the last 2 days, blizzard conditions, whiteouts, today they are expecting an ice storm on top of all that snow..many are without power..and this is spring! If the ice is heavy enough it will bring down tree branches some of which will fall on the power lines, making it difficult and dangerous for the crews to fix them..I saw your flooding on the news..it was shocking to see such power...

hi, Seaburngirl..thanks for your nice welcome..I've been lurking around Goy for a couple of years now, but was too busy to join in, really happy to finally make it..last spring I had only one plant to check on..a small forsythia bush that Patrick [middle son] planted the previous fall...I missed my old garden so much I was out there every day, checking, checking,...finally, it put out one little flower..one!..that's all I had all spring..during the summer I was busy building my back path..very slowly, I could only move about 4 pavers a day, and the contractors were building the ramp so I didn't get any plants in until late in the season, except for some bushes, and then I couldn't bear the thought of another lean spring, so I ran amuck and bought whatever I could find at the garden center...even some without tags...not that the tags made any difference, I can't remember most of what's in there, but the rabbits seem to know and approve of my tasty choices....

Hi Stroller,...thanks for the welcome...I'd be lost without my garden, it's really the only exercise I get, and frankly, at this stage, I need to keep moving as much as I can...I've had arthritis for 50 years...not too many unaffected joints left but at least it's just ostio, not rheumatoid...I learnt many years ago that the key to living with this condition is to pace myself, not that I'm always patient about that! Things do get done, but oh, so slowly.....I need to add a few slabs to my path this year, but I might get some help with that....nice talking with you, Stroller......
