Cleared the garden debris despite neighbour concerns. discovered a rockery, hence my visit here, glad I found the website, its so inspiring. I’m a total novice but I already know what I like and don’t like re colours, so now onto soil types, location, and all those other wordy things! sad to see some things go, but looking forward to regrowth and good times with the kids…

How great to discover a rockery. You'll have a wonderful time deciding what to put into it. So many lovely plants to choose from. I'm not keen on yellow or red in my garden, but I have discovered that one or two of these more zingy colours can really lift the more gentler pinks, lilacs, blues & whites that I love so much & they really draw the eye over to them. Structural plants, such as grasses & flaxes, are also great, & give additional interest. There is a beautiful virtually black grass called Mondo which I think would work very well in a rockery. It would look stunning next to a vivid pink. I'm not an expert on rockeries, & I'm sure other more experienced members will have some great advice. Looking forward to seeing Before & After pics. Welcome to GoY, by the way. You'll enjoy it & if you click onto Gopedia & scroll down to R, you will find great photos of rockeries to inspire you ....or just click onto R below.

Welcome to Goy, clearing the debris does make a big difference when viewing a new garden, finding a rockery would be a bonus to me, have you only just taken over the garden, the reason I ask is because if it has already been cultivated and planted up in the past then you will probably find a lot of hidden gems in the coming months.
I wish you well with it, enjoying yourself whilst working out there is priority number one in my book, otherwise its just another chore and we have enough of those, lol.....

Have you just moved to a new house and garden? The best advice is to wait and see what comes up (in the rest of the garden!) because as Lincslass said, there might well be plants you'd like to keep.

Welcome to GoY - you'll get plenty of advice and ideas from this site! Good luck with your rockery. :-)

welcoe to GoY from me too. I agree with the advice to just clear the obvious weeds and then see what comes up over thecoming year. Chat with the neighbours too, they may well remember what is in the garden.
Anything you cant identify you can ask for id help here, by posting photos etc. enjoy your garden

Wow, how exciting, a new garden to get to know and develop! I think this is a good time of the year to take on a garden too, you can see the bare bones while the plants are dormant and get to know them as they wake up. As Spritz says, it is wise to do very little other than maintenance jobs in the first year (gardening mistakes can be quite expensive in several ways); maybe keep a photographic record as the year passes and develop a record on here of the existing plants .... and don't be afraid to use the Gardening Questions facility for help with identifying plants or care tips, we are only too pleased to help. I hope you grow to enjoy gardening as much as we do and accrue many happy hours on GoY.
