I wasn’t expecting to have another garden project this year….a few days ago I noticed the large evergreen shrub at the end of the front garden( an area I rarely work on) was dying in several places.Originally, 22 years ago,this was part of a flower arrangement…I just popped it into the ground and hoped for the best….it grew and grew.
I thought perhaps we could save half of it but sadly no…the 4th photo shows how much it had died.
Owen,my son,offered to use his chain saw to cut it down to ground level….the area just lit up after it was removed….so much more light.
Ivy had been growing underneath it so we had to deal with that…
I thought it would be more practical to redirect the slab paving path across this area.
We also utilised part of a spare pallet to encourage the variegated shrub on the right to grow across it.There are 2 green bins , a young Ilex and Acuba behind the pallet.
I also had a brainwave perhaps the large potted Leucothoe would look good in the the far corner under the tree.
I will plant some Autumn bulbs around the Hellibores which will hopefully complete the area.
Doesn’t it always feels better when there is no cash outlay,only time and

Its always good when one doesn't have to spend to get it sorted out, shame about your shrub but sometimes they just cannot be saved, I know from my own experience in recent years, I agree with Kate it has lightened it up a lot, I like where you have positioned the footpath...It looks lovely Julia.x

Good to hear you’re pleased with the changes…some new bulbs planted there will add some lovely colour too! Sometimes it really lovely to alter an aspect in the garden…different views, can be uplifting too.

It certainly has succumbed, Julia. But..it’s nice to have a change isn’t it! I have to say, the area now looks lighter and brighter too! The last two pics are so pretty, very picturesque, are you happy with it all now? Looks good!
