My Balcony

It’s been so windy all this week; I haven’t been able to do much out on my balcony. It’s been lovely since Friday I have planted a lot of my plants out, I have more room to sow more seeds now. I need to pot some plant’s on I’m hoping to do that tomorrow William, my neighbor. Asked me if we could grow Brussels sprout, cabbage and carrots I was wondering, has anyone grown theses on their balcony? This is going to be my new challenge or; maybe not. Everything looks lovely and green on the balcony; so different from last year. I was sitting out there this morning having a nice cup of tea, listening to my little water feature, birds singing. What more could I ask for? Ok; maybe a big garden.

William and Charley have been out doing a bit of gardening this morning, Charley planted out the basil yesterday; that he did from seeds. Well done Charley you’re getting there. I’m going to ask William to do a bit of seeding next. The only thing is; I’m a bit bossy and think it should be done my way; our William is a little shy, but I’m sure we will do just fine.

That wind was a tricky beggar wasn't it and also very cold, it rained here a lot over the 5 days but I've been planting out today and the ground was very dry, like you our weekend has been a lot warmer and its always good to enjoy a cuppa listening to the birds..
Now Maria you treat those lads right, you're s'posed to encourage not boss them about...

Thank you all for reading my blog. I will tell William, he can grow carrots. That can be his challenge; I will do my best to stand back and let William sow his carrots. I will let you know how we get on, with that one. Hahaha. Yes I am lucky, they are really nice lads. All my neighbours are lovely.

Nice that you've got some help!
Carrots should be successful in a container on the balcony.i used to grow one called Mini Finger in pots.it was lovely...tiny little roots that could be eaten raw with a salad or cooked.

That you, I will tell them. Is it a bit late to sow carrots now?

You could still sow the globe rooted ones anyway.

I will have a look for them. Thank you

Still ok to sow carrots for a few weeks yet.

Thank you, I sowed the carrots seeds outsite today. The name of the carrot is Autumn King, harvest June-October. I’ve never grown carrots before.

May need to cover them with something(mesh/fleece) to keep the carrot fly at bay. autumn King are a good ,regular variety!

I'm just about to plant some globe rooted ones. Our soil is too heavy for long ones but I'm going to give it a try on the best bit! Lets hope we are both successful!

Good luck

Maria I'm afraid you won't be able to grow anything from the Brassica family on your balconies - they grow far too large for such a small space (unless you can find a Lilliputian variety that is!). They also need a very long growing season. I once tried growing potatoes on our balcony but they took up far too much of the precious space on our balcony & the yield was low - not worth the effort of growing them another year. Tomatoes on the other hand, being as they are grown vertically, take up little space & give a good crop!

I think Hispi or Greyhound cabbages might be OK?

Steragram, even though I believe that there cabbages grow more upright than round ones I think they still take up more room than is available on a balcony.

I think there would be room, they are really quite compact.
