Perry's Unfortunate Adventure

I took Perry, our inquisitive, 6 month old Shih Tzu, to visit a friend this morning. We stayed for an hour and had a lovely chat and a cup of coffee, then went for a walk up Jan’s very large garden. Perry loves visiting Jan because he can run around like a lunatic, he likes to chase leaves and explore the undergrowth. Jan has a lovely big wildlife pond in her garden and Perry loves to run around it. Unfortunately, he was running a little too fast today and didn’t apply the brakes quickly enough and fell head first into the pond! Now this pond is very deep, very big and very cold. Perry must have been a bit disorientated and panicky because he started to swim to the middle of the pond, I was panicking because I thought I was going to have to get in fully clothed to rescue him. Fortunately, for once, he did as he was told and started to swim to me, where I was able to pull him out. He looked like a drowned rat! He was shaking with fear and cold and was VERY smelly. So I took him home wrapped in three of Jan’s towels, and for the second time this week he has had a bath.

He is now clean, dry and warm, and is none the worse for his little adventure. At the moment he is laid in the study trying his hardest to ignore me and pretend that he’s not my friend anymore. There’s gratitude for you, but at least he smells nice.

what sort of personality does a Shih Tzu have? apart from looking fabulous ~ are they very demanding?

Poor little thing. He's so cute. Bless him I'm not suprised he was scared. It would be like me falling in a swimming pool when I can't swim! I'm sorry though Mandym I did have bit of a giggle at the way you told the story. Lets just hope he's not been put off water for life.

Poor thing. He must have had a shock. I'm pleased to hear he's all right now. He's very pretty :o)

Thanks Bloomer, Sticki & Diggin. Hopefully his mishap will keep him away from ponds in future. He climbs onto a very shallow wall in our garden and sits behind our pond, and although it's only a small pond I have visions of him falling into that (not to mention sitting on all the plants)! Sticki, Shih Tzu's are very friendly and loving dogs, they like nothing better than to be cuddled. They only need a small amount of exercise daily and can get that playing in the garden if you're unable to walk them. They are a long haired breed and need to be groomed weekly, so a lot of people keep them clipped short for that reason.

If only it weren't for the grooming they would be perfect eh Sticki? ! lol x...oh, and if you didn't have to feed them as well..that would also be good! ;) Nothing like a Jack Russel Terrier eh? but very good for a person who can't get about much I should think.

jack russels bark quite a lot dont they? do these bark much?

Shih Tzu's aren't really barky or yappy dogs. They're quite placid but sturdy really, considering they look like teddy bears. Perry has a mad hour after his walk when he likes nothing better than to play fight with my husband. He then just collapses on the floor near me and sleeps! He really is an absoloute joy to have, Karen, and I must admit we (I mean, I) spoil him rotten - he has been know to have fillet steak for his tea much to my husbands disgust!!

LOL!! Mandy! Molly gets our leftovers sometimes too! I must say, I find her hard work sometimes, just because she has so much energy and is very very terratorial (so yes, that's why all the barking Sticki), but as the years go by and we get used to each other, she and I are becoming very good friends indeed, and she makes us all laugh. Jack Russels are very intelligent and so you get all the fun of that too. However, I don't think I would have another Jackie to be honest. I think most of them are quite difficult to train, whereas Molly is just so eager to do as she's told....a lot of the time she doesn't manage it, but at least you can see that she really does try! A good example of this is the way that every time we go to the beach, when she's started to get tired, after about half an hour of chasing full pelt after the ball, she looks around for someone else to play with, and if I don't distract her really fast, she's off to the other side of the beach and drops the ball at some total strangers feet and won't stop until I go and physically pull her away..even if they have a great big dog! That's funny, but also very annoying! :))

That is so funny, really made me laugh. We were supposed to be taking Perry to the beach tomorrow for the first time, after today's little adventure I'm not so sure he'll enjoy it now LOL. Perry is still a baby but is getting alittle better at doing as he is told. Shih Tzu's are known for willfulness, and Perry certainly has this trait! He does what we want when HE wants to do it!

Perry is a sweetie and I'm pleased he isn't too traumatized after his slip up in the water! He must have run just that bit too fast and couldn't stop.

Are they like Lhassa...whatsanames? They look a bit like them don't they....my daughter's bf has one ..Maisie. Maisie is also very wilful and quite different to Molly. She isn't allowed to come downstairs in case she hurts herself..has to be carried! (snigger!!!! ;)

Thanks Whistonlass, Perry doesn't seem too traumatised by his ordeal, he's back to his usual bubbly self! I'm sure Minty would not be very happy to share you or her home with a canine interloper, Sticki, lol.

Shih Tzu have a shorter nose than Lhasso Apso and are much prettier, Karen. They are also much sturdier than Lhasso's though they look quite fragile. If we didn't get Perry clipped he would look like Dougal from the Magic Roundabout. Now that would take some looking after! (Perry can come down the stairs on his own!!)

Oh yes, definitely prettier! :)
