I am going to grow veg next year.

My dear friend Barbara (of cane in her neck fame) and I are going to take over her husbands vegetable plot. We are novices so expect lots of questions. Pete died a week ago and we thought this was something we could do in his memory. Pete Chang was an internationally famous jeweller (you should Google his work) but his second love was growing veg and trees. I have bought Barbara the RHS book on growing vegetables for her birthday but I am sure we will need backup.
Stage 1.The Garlic is in. :0)

Condolences to Barbara, and what a lovely memorial to him that veg garden will be. (especially if you grow lots of brightly coloured veg...) I'm so glad she will have your help and support and wish you both great crops and happy digging!

Linda, I have Googled Peter Chang's work and am truly amazed. Someone has called him a modern-day Faberge and I can see why. His use of a medium like plastic is extraordinary. The Art world has suffered a great loss as has his family. Sincerest condolences to Barbara.

A living memorial seems a fitting tribute and I can only echo Stera's comment about growing lots of brightly-coloured veg. as "his second love was for vegetables and trees." I gather he had a good sense of humour so something a bit "different" added to the (above) plot would prove a good "thinking-point" for Barbara and for your good self, and another tribute to the artist.

Touching the soil is a great therapy in times of loss.
There is still time to get the over Winter Onions sets in.
Plant them 2" deep so that they form strong roots so the birds dont pull the green shoots out for fun.

That sounds like a great idea Linda..for both of you.

It is a good idea, Karen. I also like Eirlys and Stera's idea for lots of colour. The cabbages are still growing and the onions might be there too. I'll get back to you on that one Diane.
He was a lovely man .......quiet but funny.

Very sorry to read this Linda, condolences to your friend, its a lovely idea to help her with the garden and I know from experience how much peace it can bring to us at times like this, I look forward to seeing how you get on with it all.....Cannot offer advice as my garden has failed miserably over the years when it comes to growing veggies, hence the fact its ornamental with a few salad crops and green beans mixed amongst everything else, good luck with your endeavours...
